Things to consider—

Since early 2011, Obama's been waging proxy war on Syria. Imported death squads masquerade as freedom fighters. The scheme's familiar. It repeats. It reflects US imperialism's dark side. In the 1980s, CIA-recruited mujahideen fighters battled Afghanistan's Soviet occupiers. Ronald Reagan called them "the moral equivalent of our founding fathers." He characterized Contra killers the same way. —Stephen LendmanFor over a century now US ambassadors have acted as fifth columns in the nations they are embedded in, their role chiefly to foster corporate and plutocratic power and coordinate machinations against any truly pro-democratic government.•••••"The dead end identity politics of SF Pride, which sells out a peace hero like Bradley Manning to curry favor with the American ruling class, is what I had in mind. The empire loves your tameness, irrelevance and cowardice, SF Pride. You don’t bother the American ruling class — a five foot two, 105 pound soldier does because he has a conscience and because he didn’t make comfort the guiding principle of his life...." —Randy Shields

Obama is setting himself up to fashion another “grand compromise” with the right. He will explain this is the “adult” thing to do. But his supporters may once again see betrayal. As the polls keep reporting, the populace is overwhelmingly opposed to any political deal-making that punishes them again for a catastrophe they did not cause. People seem to know it is wrong to dump more pain on them while the real malefactors are not held accountable for their sins.

Standard & Poor’s, the self-righteous credit-rating agency, has a damn lot of nerve. It provoked scary headlines by solemnly threatening to “short” America. That is, downgrade the credit-worthiness of US Treasury bonds unless Congress and the president oblige creditors by punishing the citizenry with severe budget cuts. What a load of crap. Trump

Every once in a while you get a development that nicely symbolizes the present state of American culture (or, perhaps, “culture”).

Like Madonna, for example. Or Jersey Shore.

Presently, it’s the rise of Donald Trump, who has lately been sitting at the top of polls conducted among Republican voters as to their presidential choice for 2012. Continue reading »

Plus que ça change…

The 2012 presidential elections will probably show, once again, the strong hold that the “Lesser Evil” has over the mind of the American voter, as Obama presents himself as the only “sane” alternative to the Republicans. But while the moneyed classes may still gloat in the masses’ stupidity, times are indeed a-changing, and certainly not thanks to Barack Obama, but perhaps because of him. After 2012 fewer and fewer Americans will believe there’s a dime’s worth of difference between the two faces of the corporate party. And that critical realization may finally point a substantial number to question the system itself. Don’t expect overnight epiphanies, but once the system and not superficial personalities or manufactured issues are in play anything could happen. The world will have real change or it will have revolution. In both cases, revolutionary change is in the cards. Continue reading »

TGP’s Honor Video Series—

“Waste Land”
A Film by Lucy Walker

I RECENTLY BUMPED INTO THIS LYRICAL, SPELLBINDING FILM on our threatened PBS, a film made by the gifted Lucy Walker (more below)…a documentary of all things about garbage, or more precisely about Brazilian artist Vik Muniz’s work among people who pick through literally mountains of garbage every day and night—the fabled catadores—in one of the world’s largest landfills—the Jardim Gramacho in Rio de Janeiro—and still not only manage to maintain their dignity and humanity but provide indelible lessons on how to act in the face of near insurmountable odds. Could a story like this be captured in the US? Have our poor—let alone our middle class— lost the common sense these humble protagonists exude? Perhaps. That is indeed one of the questions that may haunt us after encountering the stories described in this film. This is a “must watch” for any American, and an indispensable experience for anyone working to change this nation.  —P. Greanville

O'Donnell: Often like a bulldog, BUT he does shill for the Democrats a bit too much.

IN THIS SEGMENT of “The Last Word” MSNBC’s Larry O’Donnell berates Republicans for being out of sync with most of America, including many of their own rank-and-file.  Their continued attempts to rewrite the tax code to benefit the corporate superrich are beginning to meet with mounting resistance and rejection across America. (4.22.11) Continue reading »

Editor’s Note: Killing Medicare (and Social Security) has always been high on the plutocracy’s agenda. The corporadoes and super rich HATE and above all FEAR such programs, because they work. Their example is dangerous. They’re like shiny islands of efficiency and generosity in an ocean of putrid, mean-spirited capitalist waters, colored everywhere by selfishness. —P. Greanville

Paul Ryan (podium) with fellow GOP liars and criminals. Naturally, they all express admiration for Ronald Reagan, perhaps one of the most malignant politicians in American history.

LAST WEEK, in a dramatic vote, the House of Representatives voted to effectively end Medicare by voting for Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget proposal. Under Ryan’s plan, the public health insurance system known as Medicare would be replaced with a system of inadequate subsidies seniors would use to purchase private insurance.

All but four House Republicans voted for Ryan’s plan. Since the vote, Republicans have been engaged in a major public relations effort where they are claiming they actually are “saving Medicare” by ending its status as public health insurance program and handing seniors over to insurance companies. Yet Main Street Americans don’t appear to be buying the GOP rhetoric, as they are angrily confronting Republican Members of Congress at their town hall events, demanding to know why they want to end Medicare.
