Living in Denial: Why Even People Who Believe in Climate Change Do Nothing About It ANIMAL MARTYRDOM, ANNOTATED NEWS Comments Off May 232011 By Christine Shearer, Left Eye on Books Posted on May 23, 2011 Humans have stolen their future. Now what? Don’t be fooled by the title of Kari Marie Norgaard’s Living in Denial - this is not a book about people who reject the basic science of climate change (I’m looking at you, Koch brothers and Exxon). This is a book about many of us, and how we to varying degrees live in denial. Although focusing on a small rural community in Norway, Norgaard sheds light on how people systematically interact in ways that serve to downplay or ignore climate change, and avoid the unsettling emotions it raises. The Aftermath of Bin Laden’s Assassination ANNOTATED NEWS, Obama, Olympian-class scumbags, Policies & Politicians Comments Off May 232011 Shamus Cooke | May 8, 2011 The old bogeyman is dead. Long live constant terror! Like Bush, Jr., before him, Obama is proving that a puffed-up and “powerful” president is a dangerous president. It was only a matter of time before Obama used his newfound popularity and warrior credentials to wreak military havoc elsewhere. Are Well-Off Progressives Standing in the Way of a Real Movement for Economic Justice? ANNOTATED NEWS, CLASS STRUGGLE 1 Response » May 232011 Editor’s Note: When all is said an done, the author is essentially fingering the old problem with centrist/reformist mainstream liberals, often discussed in these pages. The Marxian truism that one’s social station usually creates ideology (and passion or lack thereof for social justice and a more radical transformation of society) is once again proven correct. The bottom line is that liberals (the vast majority of the technocrats in progressive institutions) are willing and happy members of the bourgeoisie, and as such feel no urgency to truly upset the existing power distribution. Over the past few years, it’s become an article of faith among progressives that we’re living through a second Gilded Age — you know, an era in which great fortunes accrue to powerful business leaders and institutions and the nation’s wealth is concentrated at the very top. In the past few months, as Republicans have proposed budgets that would cut taxes still further on the backs of the middle and working class, progressives have hammered away at the statistics — like that the top 1 percent of Americans hold 34.6 percent of the nation’s wealth; the bottom 90 percent, just 26.9 percent. More on that below. On May 17, in fact, New York Times writers Mark Landler and Helene Cooper headlined, “As Uprisings Transform Mideast, Obama Aims to Reshape the Peace Debate,” saying: Ahead of his speech, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he’d offer “some specific new ideas about US policy toward the region.” Continue reading » Did you like this?
