Things to consider—

Since early 2011, Obama's been waging proxy war on Syria. Imported death squads masquerade as freedom fighters. The scheme's familiar. It repeats. It reflects US imperialism's dark side. In the 1980s, CIA-recruited mujahideen fighters battled Afghanistan's Soviet occupiers. Ronald Reagan called them "the moral equivalent of our founding fathers." He characterized Contra killers the same way. —Stephen LendmanFor over a century now US ambassadors have acted as fifth columns in the nations they are embedded in, their role chiefly to foster corporate and plutocratic power and coordinate machinations against any truly pro-democratic government.•••••"The dead end identity politics of SF Pride, which sells out a peace hero like Bradley Manning to curry favor with the American ruling class, is what I had in mind. The empire loves your tameness, irrelevance and cowardice, SF Pride. You don’t bother the American ruling class — a five foot two, 105 pound soldier does because he has a conscience and because he didn’t make comfort the guiding principle of his life...." —Randy Shields

TRUER THAN LIFE…spelling alla Siciliana…

Nota Bene: Tony Sirico, sitting next to Lorraine B at the judges’ table,  is more than just an (excellent) late-blooming actor. He had more than a passing experience with the underworld before being picked up to star in The Sopranos. That experience was paid with some hard time in the slammer. Sirico is not just a movie wiseguy, he’s the real package.

Over the coming decade, emissions growth from the Alberta tar sands is projected to be greater than all other Canadian economic sectors combined

Busily punching scars on the face or our earth.

by Mike De Souza, Climate & Capitalism
Thank you Climate & Capitalism & Monthly Review, where this piece originally appeared.
Calgary Herald, February 21, 2012

Collateral damage from Canada’s booming oilsands sector may be irreversible, posing a “significant environmental and financial risk to the province of Alberta,” says a secret memorandum prepared for the federal government’s top bureaucrat.

The memorandum, released by the Privy Council Office through access to information legislation, also raises doubts about recent industry and government claims that oilsands companies are reducing heat-trapping gases produced by each barrel of oil. Continue reading »

‘Million Dollar Listing New York,’ fine views

The real estate brokers on this Bravo series are not likeable

By Tom Conroy, Media Life
Thank you, Tom Conroy; thank you, Media Life

Editor’s Note: Although TGP, as our readers know, is firmly planted on the independent left (and by that we don’t mean liberals), striving to be an engaging information and commentary platform for the 99%, we often go outside our normal boundaries to explore pieces that merit attention on account of their cultural value. This review, spotted on Media Life, on one of Bravo’s latest offerings (focusing on Manhattan’s revolting high-end real estate market), is a perceptive window into capitalism’s ugly bestiary in one of its foulest cesspoools and playgrounds. Hence our bringing it to your attention. Continue reading »

MONTHLY REVIEW: Review of the Month

THANK YOU Monthly Review friends.  This article is a selection from MR, July-August 2010
We urge our readers to support Monthly Review
By Marta Harnecker

Harnecker speaking at conference commemorating President Salvador Allende

Introduction

Twenty years ago, left forces in Latin America and in the world in general were going through a difficult period. The Berlin Wall had fallen; the Soviet Union hurtled into an abyss and disappeared completely by the end of 1991. Deprived of the rearguard it needed, the Sandinista Revolution was defeated at the polls in February 1990, and Central American guerrilla movements were forced to demobilize. The only country that kept the banners of revolution flying was Cuba, although all the omens said that its days were numbered. Given that situation, it was difficult to imagine that twenty years later, left-wing leaders would govern most of the Latin American countries. Continue reading »

SPUSA Presidential Candidate Stewart Alexander Live

by Pinko the Bear

Listen to internet radio with Pinko the Bear on Blog Talk Radio

The Pinko the Bear Show is at a Special TIme on Monday March 10th at 1 PM Pacific TIme.

My guest will be Stewart Alexander – He is the nominee of the Socialist Party USA (SPUSA) – www.stewartalexanderforpresident2012.org/

Tired of the UniParty? the Dems and the GOP got you down? Want to explore the possibility of a better world? Want to find out more about Stewart Alexander and the Socialist Party USA? Want to call in with your own questions after I ask a few like… Why Socialism? Can Capitalism be Reformed or is it indeed the core of our problem? What is  the difference between SPUSA and the Communist Party or the Greens? How is the SPUSA different than say, Bernie Sanders or the Northern European style of democratic socialim? Is he in it to win it or just to raise awareness and build the party? What percentage of the national vote would he consider a success? What does he think about Occupy? What can we do to help the campaign and what are the kinds of things he think we should be doing in order to build a better world? So many questions come to mind. This should be an interesting show.
