I doubt that this was done intentionally, but I believe it’s instructive nonetheless.
Observe closely the following item, filed by NBC Today on the standoff in Toulouse, France, between a supposedly al-Quaida militant and the police. (21 March 2012). The gunman is allegedly the same man who assassinated three French soldiers and also attacked a Jewish school, killing a Rabbi and some children. Shedding the blood of innocents is never commendable, indeed a horrible act, no matter what cause someone is sworn to serve, but the curious thing here is that the report by Jim Maceda points out in a sort of deadpan way that the gunman claimed as his justification the atrocious US/NATO war in Afghanistan, where countless innocents have been killed, and the Israeli assaults on the Palestinian population, whose atrocity is equally well documented (but not so, well reported). These are undeniable facts, but, if this item is indicative, the Western media appear so sure that the audience will not be able to interpret things correctly, will be incapable of seeing the rough ethical parity between the attacker’s acts and the horrendous deeds of our own “democratic” nations, that they simply let the truth out of the bag. The lie is so strong, the brainwash so effective, the self-righteousness so brazen, that not even truth—albeit infrequently mentioned—can overturn it.
Useless comment
Most well informed thinking people know that these ugly acts on both sides—with a huge lopsided advantage in lethality on the side of the Western alliance led by the US—will go on until justice, real democracy, and truth become firmly embedded in the political fabric of precisely these powers, the chief purveyors of violence in our time. Only then, after the multiple layers of outright lies and hypocrisy have been swept away, will these Orwellian societies reconstruct their foreign policies to stop provoking the kind of ugly retaliation that feeds the eternal “war on terror”.
Meanwhile…media person, how do you plead? Are YOU aware what role YOU play in the maintenance of this worldwide system of lies? Do you realize that a half-truth can be more damaging than a total lie?—PG
