[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ittle known outside Russia, The Ascent (originally released as The Ascension) in 1977, remains one of the great films by women directors, and a fine example of Soviet cinema. The film’s director, the talented Larisa Shepitko, originally from Ukraine, died in a car crash in 1979, at 41, scarcely two years after the release of this film, regarded as her finest.
