Our colleague Steve Jonas has alerted us to this item which we regard as important enough to pass on.
Steve says:
“We all know that “Israel” does not equal “Netanyahu/Likud/Expulsionists.” For example, here’s the URL for the ” ’67 Borders ad” run in Israel and on the NYT on Thursday, May 19, 2011: http://jstreet.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/IsraelAd_Eng.pdf. It deserves very wide circulation, esp. since, so far at least, I have seen no mention of it on the mainstream media.
Best, S.”

Obviously, Obama won’t have pleased everyone with yesterday’s speech. Leaving that topic for another day I want to emphasize this, from Juan Cole (which “responds” in part to the Murdochized WSJ piece Michael quoted):“Obama has been told by Israel-firsters in the US that his position on moving rapidly to a two-state solution endangers his ability to fund-raise among Jewish Americans (who provide a vastly disproportionate amount of money for political campaigns, estimated as high as 65% among Democrats) and therefore could imperil his campaign for a second term. To his credit, he has stuck to his guns, since a quick move to a two-state solution would benefit both the United States and Israel, not to mention the Palestinians.”Has WSJ reportage always been as craven as it now seems to be? I don’t think so. I vividly recall the 3/21/03 piece by Greenberger that said — unlike the rest of the US press — that Netanyahu’s people (specifically the awful Uzi Arad) supported the Iraq invasion because it would result in “democracy” and “democracies don’t attack democracies.” Which is a misapplication of an already-problematic notion of “democratic piece” that Michael Doyle and Bruce Russett have been promoting. The WSJ reporters I’ve met detested the editorial page crew. That may have changed under Murdoch.Best,DanDaniel Tompkins
