Short takes to jog our revolutionary juices—

There is a section of environmentalist thought that contends, essentially, that the extinction of homo sapiens (that’s us) would be a good thing for Earth – perhaps the best hope for the survival of all other species. I’m not quite “all in” on that point of view, but I’m getting there. Let’s consider some recent items in the news.
Item 1: It seems likely that cellphones are behind the wide-scale die-off of honeybees. Boffins inGermany and elsewhere believe radiation waves from mobile communications are disorienting bees and causing what’s been termed “colony collapse disorder,” which in turn is hurting honey production and threatening crops that depend on bees for pollination.
Item 2: We’re doing a shitty job of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, so global warming or “weirding” of our climates is pushing the world towards global chaos. According to the International Energy Agency, carbon dioxide emissions were higher than ever in 2010. In other words, people made the situation worse rather than better last year.
On both these files, a rational and forward-thinking species would take decisive corrective action. But as a species we don’t seem to behave that way; individuals among us do, but the global lot of us (7 billion and growing) does not. The selfish will insist that cellphones are indispensible no matter what the consequences, and they’ll say an aggressive strategy to cut C02 emissions would smite economic growth and carry too many inconveniences and compromises in our lifestyles (less jet travel, smaller automobiles).
These days I see homo sapiens as a species headed for self-destruction. Please prove to me that I’m way off-base. Please.
