Alarmingly, the greatest income gap is not between the 1 percent and the 99 percent, but within the wealthiest 1 percent of our nation—as the merely wealthy are left behind by the rapidly expanding fortunes of the new global super-rich. Chrystia Freeland MP (born February 8, 1968) is a Canadian writer, journalist and politician. Freeland has served in various editorial positions with the Financial Times, The Globe and Mail and Thomson Reuters, where she was the managing director and editor for consumer news before she announced her resignation to run for the Liberal Party nomination in the by-election to replace Bob Rae as the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre. Hedges misses an important point: poverty like extreme wealth does not create human nobility. On the contrary it breeds lateral violence and a break-down of human morality in the struggles to survive. The upper classes and lowest classes share amoral and asocial survival instincts, because in both cases they have nothing left to lose, even though extreme wealth is fairly well protected. But in capitalism wealth is a fluid system because lateral elite competition within their ranks for economic supremacy is as fierce as the battle against the lower classes. The elite is fearful of its protectors as well as servants and correctly sees everyone as being its enemy even inside its own reinforced walls of prestige and supremacy. It is the middle classes aptly named, who support the conventional morality and fully girds the bastions and battlements of the status quo fortress. Any change will have to come from subverting this large slice of society which will be far from easy as every nook and cranny of their existence has been predetermined and closed to ideas that might break through their comfortable shell of bondage. The Stockholm syndrome of learning how to love your jailers is a real problem that is obfuscated by the pure fantasy of democratic representation, unrealistic notions of such as free enterprise and the chance of joining the exploiter classes.
