These pictures are lovely… but they wont make a dent in overturning the genesis mandate:
Genesis 9:1-3 “The fear and dread of you shall rest on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and just as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.'”
To those reared on the vitriol of dominion… two images in particular are a reminder… that despite as effort to present animals as favorable… as more like us…with friends from different species… they are not like us… According to genesis they are less than us and their lives may be violated and destroyed in the never ending sanctified violence of dominion…. The image of a rhino grazing peacefully and a deer standing still surrounded by trees, shrubs and grass are a reminder that an arrogant white male christian of the dominion persuasion killed a trophy rhino to prove his valor. For this empty honor… he paid tens of thousands of dollars…. The deer standing quietly in the forest is a reminder of the endless culls, canned hunts, bow hunting and all the treacherous schemes of dominion. The young man sitting with cattle is a reminder as well… In the USA we slaughter 9 billion… ‘food’ animals/year… sanitized and guilt free, by virtue of dominion.
It will take more than lovely images of animals with the capacity to form friendships to undo the wrath of genesis. It will take a radical ideal to overthrow this violence…. It will take the ideal of ahimsa – reverence for life… found in the Jain tradition of India:
“All things breathing, all things existing, all living beings whatever, would not be slain or treated with violence, or insulted, or tortured or driven away. This is the pure unchanging eternal law, which the wise ones who know the world have proclaimed…” Jain Acharanga Sutra
‘Don’t kill any living beings. Don’t try to rule them.’ Mahavira (Acaranga, 4/2
