Excess seems inbred in consumerist culture, especially in the American way of life model, where the individual is allowed to do whatever s/he pleases as long as s/he does not make waves politically. And hat includes suicide by overeating. The cases illustrated in this stunning video are truly beyond bizarre, but the frequency with which we now encounter such people—at one time so rare as to be consigned to circuses—is indicative that the culture is going off the rails. Not only that, but while the cases featured in this compilation are not shown to be destitute of social support, it is obvious that a different kind of social organization, with inherently higher standards of collective mutual care, could have prevented these individuals from becoming prisoners of their own body.

Incidentally, don’t worry, we are not becoming the National Enquirer. But we do look at all aspects of modern social life.
