Will Smith’s Oscar night assault on Chris Rock was much more than a simple physical confrontation between two celebrities – it also represented every stand-up comedian’s worst fear, that an enraged fan will storm the stage looking to exact revenge for a perceived slight or insult. Smith’s unhinged attack may well usher in an open season on comedians as comedy club attendees feel empowered to respond to jokes with violence. Jane joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head and her husband Will Smith jumped up on stage and assaulted Rock. Not only did security NOT haul Will Smith off to be arrested, but just a few minutes later Smith was back on stage, accepting the Best Actor Oscar and tearfully effusing about being a “vessel of love” and channeling God by defending his family.
