These are two intelligent thoughtful military men. They together provide a far more realistic approach to dealing with the current ongoing crisis, notably most recently in Ukraine. The last segment has the title, What is to be done. Which coincidentally was the title of one of Lenin’s pamphlets. Doug MacGregor proceeds from the assumption that the US needs to rethink and reorganize its military, and also, needs to pay more attention to the needs of the vast majority of the people. subhuti37, as usual, has hit the nail on the head. I also found the discussion absorbing and intelligent—as far as it could possibly go for two essentially bureaucratic/military men working and thinking experientially within the confines of a highly bourgeois institution, the US “national security state.” Basically, at the risk of oversimplification, all the hard thinking to reform the system “to make it more efficient and reality-responsive” cannot overcome its ideological straitjackets.
