ERIC ZUESSE–The libertarian approach minimizes the imposition of regulations, and instead relies on “nature” to take its course, as being the best way to ‘protect the herd’. It’s opposite to the socialist approach, which consists of governmentally imposed rules, or “laws.” Of course, every country has those, but in a socialist country, the government’s right to make and enforce laws is more respected, whereas in a libertarian country, the right of individuals to violate laws is more respected. This has nothing to do with the distinction between dictatorship and democracy.

DYLAN RATIGAN—”You’re going to see a lot of empty storefronts. The drugstore [will survive because it] is a unique thing because it’s a universally and guaranteed customer base, [a] monopoly basically, right? You’re going to get your prescription, you’re going to buy soap and toothpaste, shampoo. That’s a unique situation. . .. . [Apart from that, you’ll see] empty storefronts. Small towns across America, that have little or no virus risk, but all these small businesses have been shut down for months? What are these people going to do? “And the reason they’re shut down is because the government that they pay taxes to refused to prepare for a pandemic? Forget whether we responded in time. What’s the response? There is no response!

MAXIMILIAN WERNER—Given that the lives of hundreds of black bears, lions and coyotes were at stake, I held out hope that the representatives would subordinate their own personal beliefs in service of the larger truth. But the longer I sat there, the more I realized that the meeting was not designed to consider the bigger picture. It was designed to remain impervious to it.
