Bipartisan Debt Deal Betrayal

By Stephen Lendman

The greatest highway robbery in the history of the republic, made possible by a cynical Fifth Column (guess which).

Seven previous articles explained the following:

The Great Demagog: Heading a conspiracy to fleece the masses. And don't expect the utterly lamebrain, corrupt media to blow the whistle on this disgusting scam, as it was perpetrated with their full complicity.

(1) Bipartisan lying manipulated popular sentiment to believe what political Washington won’t tolerate – defaulting or not raising the debt ceiling. In fact, it’s been done routinely 74 times since 1962, including 10 times in the last decade. Moreover, whatever may unfold ahead, default won’t happen now, and top officials know it.

In addition as Ellen Brown explains in her latest article headlined, “Bipartisan ‘Russian Roulette’ and America’s Federal Debt: The Debt Ceiling Is Unconstitutional,” authority under the 14th Amendment’s Section 4 mandates paying public debt obligations.

Despite a nonsensical 1917 law imposing a debt limit, the 14th Amendment says “the validity of the public debt of the United States….shall not be questioned.” As a result, “(w)here statute and the Constitution collide, the Constitution prevails.” It’s constitutionally mandated, “not a matter of negotiation.”

Moreover, “(t)he debt crisis was created, not by a social safety net bought and paid for by,” payroll tax deduction insurance premiums, contractually obligating Washington to pay benefits as mandated.

“The debt ceiling crisis” also was manufactured, “engineered to extort concessions that will lock the middle class in debt peonage for decades to come.”

Indeed that and much more as previous articles explained, recapped briefly below.

(2) Weeks, perhaps months ago, the fix was in to destroy America’s social contract incrementally with multiple cuts over a number of years. Principally, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and publicly funded pensions are targeted for total elimination.

Then, or perhaps coincidentally, everything else, ending all social benefits, returning America to 19th harshness. Republicans have long sought eliminating all New Deal and Great Society programs. Obama-led Democrats agree.

(3) Obama, America’s first Black president, was chosen for this purpose, doing what no Republican would dare. It was classic reverse Nixon goes to China. No Democrat would have tried when no diplomatic relations existed.

Obama is rock-hard conservative, a pro-war, pro-corporate, anti-human/civil rights ideologue neocon, pretending to be populist. His legacy’s now written, exposing him as the president who reversed a century of social progress.

Write it down, remember it, and get mad enough to resist. The alternative’s too harsh to accept. Moreover, it violates the Constitution’s “general welfare” clause – Article I, Section 8, stating:

“The Congress shall have power to….provide for (the) general welfare of the United States,” meaning all citizens, not just the privileged few.

In addition, the Preamble’s opening words are “We the People,” everyone, even though political Washington violated constitutional provisions from inception, including who benefits and who doesn’t.

On Sunday, the tradition was upheld. Phase I’s now done. Expect further cuts through 2012, then more major ones if voters foolishly reelect Obama or a Republican in 2012, or any member of America’s duopoly ever.

Their only viable option is opting out or voting progressive independent en masse. At the same time, massive nationwide protests are essential, demanding what’s now agreed be reversed, putting their bodies in harm’s way to do it.

Political Washington’s agreement is a cancer, touching all working Americans. Expunge it or perish socially, economically, and politically under the yoke of punishing poverty and neo-serfdom, a future no one should tolerate.

(4) Banana republicanization of America is planned – a kleptocracy run by venal politicians and corporate shysters, mega-thieves, criminals, scamming the public with austerity, debt peonage, and banker occupation, heading them for mass impoverishment misery so they can accumulate more wealth.

(5) Planned cuts won’t reduce America’s debt, only slow future increases. In other words, final agreement details left a festering public debt unresolved, heading the nation for eventual bankruptcy and ruin.

(6) Fixing America’s debt problem is simple if done responsibly. Yet measures begging for enactment went unaddressed, including:

— cutting military expenditures minimally in half, ideally much more, including closing overseas bases, reducing force levels, ending foreign occupations, and renouncing imperial wars;
— taxing speculators and the rich;
— making corporations pay their fair share;
— strengthening America’s social contract, not destroying it;
— stopping the offshoring of high-paying manufacturing and professional jobs plus many others;
— real regulatory reform with teeth;
— abolishing monopoly and oligopoly power;
— returning money creation power to Congress as the Constitution demands; and
— investing the nation’s capital in productive growth, not handouts to Wall Street and other corporate favorites, as well as permanent imperial wars, turning America into a corrupted, fascist, lawless sinkhole not fit to live in, except for the elite few pulling the strings.

(7) From start to finish, the fix was in. Political theater disguised it – a charade, playing out for political advantage and high stakes, each side jousting with the other, pretending they already hadn’t agreed.

Working Americans don’t know what was planned. In reports, op-eds and editorials, major media scoundrels danced around the issue, regurgitating deceptive lies. It’s their customary role, also concealing the dire state of the economy, heading for ruin because of destructive policies.

In fact, since 2008, Main Street America’s been in Depression, a condition getting worse, not better. Now hard times will deepen with greater budget cuts passed at a time massive stimulus is needed for job creation and productive economic growth. That’s not what Washington plans or intends.

On July 31, New York Times writers Carl Hulse and Helene Cooper did their job as ordered headlining, “Obama and Leaders Reach Deal,” saying:

Late Sunday, a deal was reached to “cut trillions of dollars in federal spending over the next decade” at the worst possible time, what Hulse and Cooper left unsaid, repeating the deception that default loomed without agreement.

A July 31 Times editorial continued the Big Lie, headlining, “To Escape Chaos, a Terrible Deal,” saying:

The deal will “avert a catastrophic government default,” at least “through the end of 2012. The rest of it is a nearly complete capitulation to the hostage-taking demands of Republican extremists.”

Left unsaid was no possibility of default. Not now at least. Both parties won’t tolerate it. Wall Street knows it. All corporate America, in fact, but knowledgeable pundits and editorial writers won’t explain.

Moreover, as discussed above, Obama and most Democrats back major social benefit cuts. They’re as hardline as Republicans. Pretending otherwise is gross deception. It’s a longstanding American media speciality, representing wealth and power interests only like political Washington, popular needs be damned.

Debt Deal Details

Terms call for initially raising the debt limit by $2.7 trillion in two stages, an immediate $1 trillion followed by another $1.7 trillion in four months. Over the next decade, debt ceiling increases will match cuts dollar-for-dollar.

Moreover, tax hikes are off the table. So are defense cuts, replaced by so-called “triggers,” smoke and mirrors deception never implemented since included in a 1980 spending bill.

Instead of strengthening them, non-entitlements will be cut first, including education, housing, transportation, and environmental programs as follows:

— $25 billion in FY 2012;
— $47 billion in FY 2013; and
— higher amounts to follow over the next decade.

Then a bipartisan House/Senate committee will decide on up to $1.8 trillion in further cuts, mostly hammering Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

In addition, not only won’t taxes be increased, corporate ones will be cut – quietly so most people don’t know and America’s media won’t say, or will bury brief comments well into articles unnoticed.

Moreover, most so-called progressive Democrats supported Senator Reid’s bill for $2.4 trillion in spending cuts, including $1 trillion less for defense by reducing America’s involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Republicans rejected the idea out of hand. They also wanted bigger cuts. So do Democrats concealing what they want but won’t say.

As a result, at decade’s end, far more than three trillion will be cut. What’s agreed is a down payment on further cuts to come, much more. Corporate America demands them – on the backs of working Americans, including impoverished ones needing help they won’t get.

In fact, when political betrayal is completed, America’s social contract will be gone, all of it, especially what people most value. The nation will become a wasteland. Working households will be impoverished, trapped in debt and neo-serfdom peonage.

An August 1 Wall Street Journal editorial called Sunday’s agreement “A Tea Party Triumph….a rare victory for the forces of smaller government.”

Of course, beneficiaries of big government only want socially responsible policies downsized, then eliminated entirely, so bigness they benefit from gets bigger, what Journal writers never say.

Bipartisan perfidy assures the worst of all possible worlds for working Americans, unless popular anger erupts and fights back, deciding what political Washington wants won’t be tolerated. Short of that, it’s coming. Bank on it.

TOO MUCH: Inequality Monitor 8.1.11

New Jersey's Christie: In a despicable crop of governors hellbent on serving the outrageous needs of the plutocracy.

could not find them. How is the American political system responding to this crisis? In Iowa last week, a governor hot on halving the state taxes corporations pay killed legislation that would have kept open Iowa’s 36 unemployment offices.

don’t need local offices where they can get help finding work and applying for unemployment benefits. He’s urging jobless Iowans to hit their local libraries instead and look for help on the Internet.

America’s rich, of course, don’t have to go online to find help. They have legions of lawmakers intensely devoted to their welfare, as last week’s debt ceiling debate once again demonstrated. Congress and the White House now agree that no “solution” to the ceiling crisis will dare raise taxes on America’s swells.

Treachery for the ages

New York Times July 31, 2011
The President Surrenders
Make no mistake about it, what we’re witnessing here is a catastrophe on multiple levels.
By PAUL KRUGMAN

A deal to raise the federal debt ceiling is in the works. If it goes through, [it just did—Eds] many commentators will declare that disaster was avoided. But they will be wrong.

For the deal itself, given the available information, is a disaster, and not just for President Obama and his party. It will damage an already depressed economy; it will probably make America’s long-run deficit problem worse, not better; and most important, by demonstrating that raw extortion works and carries no political cost, it will take America a long way down the road to banana-republic status.

Start with the economics. We currently have a deeply depressed economy. We will almost certainly continue to have a depressed economy all through next year. And we will probably have a depressed economy through 2013 as well, if not beyond.

The worst thing you can do in these circumstances is slash government spending, since that will depress the economy even further. Pay no attention to those who invoke the confidence fairy, claiming that tough action on the budget will reassure businesses and consumers, leading them to spend more. It doesn’t work that way, a fact confirmed by many studies of the historical record.

Indeed, slashing spending while the economy is depressed won’t even help the budget situation much, and might well make it worse. On one side, interest rates on federal borrowing are currently very low, so spending cuts now will do little to reduce future interest costs. On the other side, making the economy weaker now will also hurt its long-run prospects, which will in turn reduce future revenue. So those demanding spending cuts now are like medieval doctors who treated the sick by bleeding them, and thereby made them even sicker.

And then there are the reported terms of the deal, which amount to an abject surrender on the part of the president. First, there will be big spending cuts, with no increase in revenue. Then a panel will make recommendations for further deficit reduction — and if these recommendations aren’t accepted, there will be more spending cuts.

Republicans will supposedly have an incentive to make concessions the next time around, because defense spending will be among the areas cut. But the G.O.P. has just demonstrated its willingness to risk financial collapse unless it gets everything its most extreme members want. Why expect it to be more reasonable in the next round?

In fact, Republicans will surely be emboldened by the way Mr. Obama keeps folding in the face of their threats. He surrendered last December, extending all the Bush tax cuts; he surrendered in the spring when they threatened to shut down the government; and he has now surrendered on a grand scale to raw extortion over the debt ceiling. Maybe it’s just me, but I see a pattern here.

Did the president have any alternative this time around? Yes.

First of all, he could and should have demanded an increase in the debt ceiling back in December. When asked why he didn’t, he replied that he was sure that Republicans would act responsibly. Great call.

And even now, the Obama administration could have resorted to legal maneuvering to sidestep the debt ceiling, using any of several options. In ordinary circumstances, this might have been an extreme step. But faced with the reality of what is happening, namely raw extortion on the part of a party that, after all, only controls one house of Congress, it would have been totally justifiable.

At the very least, Mr. Obama could have used the possibility of a legal end run to strengthen his bargaining position. Instead, however, he ruled all such options out from the beginning.

But wouldn’t taking a tough stance have worried markets? Probably not. In fact, if I were an investor I would be reassured, not dismayed, by a demonstration that the president is willing and able to stand up to blackmail on the part of right-wing extremists. Instead, he has chosen to demonstrate the opposite.

Make no mistake about it, what we’re witnessing here is a catastrophe on multiple levels.

It is, of course, a political catastrophe for Democrats, who just a few weeks ago seemed to have Republicans on the run over their plan to dismantle Medicare; now Mr. Obama has thrown all that away. And the damage isn’t over: there will be more choke points where Republicans can threaten to create a crisis unless the president surrenders, and they can now act with the confident expectation that he will.

In the long run, however, Democrats won’t be the only losers. What Republicans have just gotten away with calls our whole system of government into question. After all, how can American democracy work if whichever party is most prepared to be ruthless, to threaten the nation’s economic security, gets to dictate policy? And the answer is, maybe it can’t.

Remember Libya? Yeah, Libya, not Lydia. There’s still a war (yawn) going on…

By Stephen Lendman

Gaddafi: The neoimperialists badly miscalculated his popularity.

America’s media staunchly back all US imperial wars, regurgitating officials lies as truths. Moreover, they never explain their illegality or daily crimes of war and against humanity against civilians, as well as non-military related infrastructure and other sites. Meanwhile, most Americans can’t be bothered.

Nor do they report how NATO bombing prevents targeted nations (including Libya) from providing essential public services, including enough food, medical care, electricity, fuel, and clean water.

Nonetheless, America’s led Libya war may have backfired. In Tripoli, Middle East/Central Asian analyst Mahdi Nazemroaya told Progressive Radio News Hour listeners that NATO bombing united Libyans behind Gaddafi to save their country.

Instead, American and Western media falsify reports, claiming:

— non-existent rebel gains;
— Tripoli may fall;
— the country may collapse;
— Gaddafi has little support when, in fact, mass rallies turn out in Tripoli and elsewhere for him;
— few civilians have been killed or injured when, in fact, around 1,200 or more have been killed, many thousands more injured;
— NATO only attacks military targets when, in fact, civilian ones are deliberately struck; and
— Tripoli is a ghost town, when, in fact, life goes on relatively normally in spite of daily bombings.

In other words, falsified reports suppress reality on the ground, including that NATO miscalculated. As a result, it’s losing because Libyans are united against lawless, naked aggression, refusing to let their country become another imperial trophy.

Knowing Libya’s been there before, they want none of it. Moreover, they understand Washington’s Middle East/North Africa agenda to colonize the entire region, militarize and balkanize it, control its resources, steal its wealth, and exploit its people ruthlessly. It’s why all US wars are fought, never for humanitarian reasons.

It’s the same dirty game Washington and its coalition allies repeat against all nations less than totally under their control, especially resource-rich ones. As a result, Libya was targeted for takeover, a plan that may, in fact, have backfired.

A previous article discussed NATO’s latest setback, accessed through the following link:

http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2011/07/abdul-fatah-younis-killing-war-death-or.html

Vultures over Libya. The real reason for all the hypocrisy and death is oil.

It explained the illegitimate National Transitional Council’s (NTC) disarray, evident by the assassination of its military commander, Gen. Abdul Fatah Younis. After rebel leaders admitted it (despite initially claiming his war death), The New York Times had to acknowledge what it first tried to suppress or play down, what it always does unless caught red-handed.

On July 30, London Independent writer Kim Sengupta headlined, “Rebel feud puts UK’s Libya policy in jeopardy,” saying:

Its credibility was in tatters after Younis’ assassination, revealing “a bloody internal feud.” Evidence now shows he and two aides were savagely murdered, shot at close range, perhaps tortured, and their bodies mutilated and burned, signifying how rebel Al Qaeda elements operate.

Legitimate Independent Reporting

Reporting from Tripoli, independent journalist Lizzie Phelan emailed me information to pass on to Progressive Radio Hour listeners, including that two days after Britain recognized the illegitimate TNC as Libya’s government, its military commander was assassinated.

Afterward, NTC leaders reportedly fled Benghazi in the wake of a popular uprising against them. In contrast, there’s “complete security (in Tripoli) with families enjoying days at the beach and getting ready for Ramadan (beginning August 1).”

On July 28, Gaddafi told hundreds of thousands of Tripoli residents that a battle was occurring in Benghazi. Its people are challenging TNC occupation, and when Younis’ death was announced at 2:00AM, “huge celebrations (erupted) across Tripoli with fireworks and celebratory gunfire until the early hours.”

On July 31, Phelan reported “breaking news” that Libya’s Al Fatah revolution (Gaddafi’s 1969 bloodless coup, ousting King Idris from power, establishing the Libyan Arab Republic) regained power in Benghazi.

She confirmed that Libya’s largest Warfalla tribe was marching to the rebel capital, as well as Libyan armed forces already there, adding:

Gaddafi’s “green flag is (again) flying in military barracks in Benghazi. Massive celebrations will take place in Tripoli tonight.”

Though a hopeful sign, don’t expect Washington and its NATO partners to back off gracefully. It took nearly a decade to balkanize and colonize Yugoslavia. Years more destabilization and conflict may try doing the same to Libya, whether or not it succeeds.

Aftermath of Rebel Commander’s Death

On July 30, AP reported that Younis’ son, Ashraf, broke down at his father’s funeral, “crying and screaming as they lowered the body into the ground – in a startling and risky display in a city (Benghazi) that was the first to shed Gaddafi’s rule nearly six months ago – pleaded hysterically for the return of the Libyan leader to bring stability,” saying:

“We want Muammar to come back! We want the green flag back!” referring to Libya’s national banner under him.

Notably on July 29, London Guardian writer Richard Seymour headlined, “Gaddafi is stronger than ever in Libya,” saying:

NATO’s war “has not gone well.” Efforts are under way to end it. No sign of a palace coup against Gaddafi exists. In fact, “(if his) regime is not more in control of Libya than before, then this completely undermines the simplistic view put about by the supporters of war – and unfortunately by (rebel elements) – that the situation was simply one of a hated tyrant hanging on through mercenary violence.”

From the start, of course, it was part of the Big Lie to justify war to remove him. It’s now known “that rebellious sectors started to go back to Gaddafi within weeks of the revolt taking off, meaning”  his support was stronger than reported, and now much more so.

Moreover, despite over 30 nations recognizing the illegitimate TNC, “this is pure cynicism.” In addition, Amnesty International and other independent sources disproved claims about Gaddafi committing mass killings and atrocities. “This completely demolishes the last leg of the moral case for war.”

“In fact, if there was any idea that the US could offer an alternative model of development for the populations of the Middle East, it now lies in ruins. It is more than unfortunate that Libya had to be reduced to ruins for this to become apparent.”

Although stopping short of calling for an immediate bombing halt, compare Seymour’s report to the latest July 30 New York Times one. In unabashed anti-Gaddafi mode, writer David Kirkpatrick headlined, “NATO Strikes at Libyan State TV,” saying:

On Saturday, NATO “disabled three Libyan state television transmission dishes in Tripoli with airstrikes overnight, as the alliance took steps to remove the main instrument of (Gaddafi) propaganda from the airwaves.”

Of course, The New York Times, as “the newspaper of record,” functions as the equivalent of an official US state propaganda service, reporting daily misinformation managed news, not vital truths readers need to know.

For example, it didn’t address Amnesty International’s April 23, 2009 report headlined, “No Justice for the Victims of NATO Bombings,” saying:

“Ten years on, no one has been held to account for the NATO attack on the Serbian state radio and television (RTS) building that left 16 civilians dead.” The Belgrade strike left 16 others injured.

“The bombing of the headquarters of Serbian state radio and television was a deliberate attack on a civilian object and as such constitutes a war crime,” Sian Jones, AI’s Balkans expert said.

NATO told AI it bombed RTS “because of its propaganda function, in order to undermine the morale of the population and the armed forces.” AI dismissed the claim as false justification of a war crime.

The same holds for bombing Libya Jamahiriya Broadcasting Corporation (LJBC), airing television and radio news, cultural and other reports, including satellite TV in Arabic, English and French throughout the Middle East and Europe.

It’s Libya’s equivalent of Britain’s government-funded and controlled BBC, charging residents a monthly fee on their television receivers, whether or not they watch it.

NATO tried but failed to silence Libya’s LJBC to assure only its own message got out, saying:

“Our intervention was necessary as TV was being used as an integral component of the regime apparatus designed to systematically oppress and threaten civilians and to incite attacks against them. Qaddafi’s increasing practice of inflammatory broadcasts illustrates his regime’s policy to instill hatred amongst Libyans, to mobilize its supporters against civilians and to trigger bloodshed.”

In fact, it was NATO’s latest ball-faced lie. Nonetheless, Kirkpatrick dutifully regurgitated it, the way disgraced former Times writer Judith Miller did, functioning as a Pentagon press agent in the run-up to the Iraq war.

A Final Comment

Though ground-based satellites were disabled, LJBC kept broadcasting, issuing a statement that three employees were killed, another 15 wounded. LJBC official Khalid Bazelya said:

“We are not a military target. We are not commanders in the army and we do not pose a threat to civilians. We are performing our job as journalists representing what we wholeheartedly believe is the reality of NATO aggression and the violence in Libya.”

In fact, when Gaddafi’s speeches and comments from other state officials are aired, or guests express pro-regime support, it’s no different than what appears on US TV.

Every channel (including so-called public television news and opinion shows) is littered with Democrat and Republican representatives, as well as full coverage for presidents’ speeches and many other public appearances.

It’s very much the same in other Western countries where, in fact, voices opposing imperial and corporate policies are virtually entirely shut out.

There and in America, real information on what people most need to know (including why Washington attacked Libya) is available only through alternative print and broadcast sources, mostly online.

Make them a regular habit, and what a previous article urged, saying imagine freedom from all managed and junk food news. Tune out and make it happen.

The War on You

By Michael Collins

Obama and his accomplices, all in the Money Party. Selling us down the river behind confusing rhetoric and plain lies the media will not correct.

Have no doubt: those in the upper ranges of the top 1% of wealth in this country (aka The Money Party) want to kick you to the curb. They want to reduce your social security and make you go broke paying for medical care.

They want to lower your wages and trash your retirement.

They want to ship jobs, factories, and entire businesses overseas and give companies that do that a big fat tax credit for doing so.

The pressing need to fix the budget is a separate issue. Reduced spending and increased revenues should come through broad public involvement and open debate. It mandates that the rulers behave like adults.

Were the leaders on either side of the debate serious, the Bush era tax cuts would be rescinded. These cuts on the top 1% were temporary. Guess what? Congress lied. When the temporary tax breaks ran out a few months ago, they were revived and renewed just when we had the greatest need for revenues.

The Attack on You Began in Earnest Just Years Ago

Congress repealed Depression era banking regulation that kept your banks from risky investments in 1999.

Congress enacted legislation in 2000 that allowed extremely risky investments in real estate and other derivatives, illegal for nearly a century.

In 2001, the big banks and Wall Street celebrated its newly purchased freedoms with a decade-long binge of fraud and risky investments. Like a greedy con artist, they took everything they could from people here and around the world until there was no more to take. We have now hit the wall thanks to them.

The outrageous expenses of wars based on lies caught up with us and shoved the deficit to new heights. The tax cuts for the top 1% took away revenues needed to balance the budget.

The money they steal from the Social Security surplus is no longer enough. They want to keep the tax in place for us and take an even bigger rake-off.

This crisis is manufactured by the ongoing greed of The Money Party. It is funded by the US Treasury. You pay for it, all of it.

PROMOTIONAL MESSAGE
A TOOL IS USELESS IF IT’S NOT USED.
Don’t just sit there…introduce a friend or relative to The Greanville Post and help us expand the reach of remedial ideas and information. If each of you brings merely ONE additional reader to the table, we will be able to double our circulation!
