RAMONA WADI—The U.S. may now speak of an allegedly democratic government in terms of elections. However, Bolsonaro’s intent to replicate the 1964 dictatorship under democratic guise, as well as the U.S.-Brazilian efforts to interfere in Venezuela, speak of a repetition of history. With Venezuela part of the U.S. military agenda, in collaboration with allies Colombia and Brazil, Bolsonaro has facilitated U.S. infiltration in the region.
ARTS & FILMBRAZIL
Sensual, liberated and irrepressible: When it comes to Carnival, Brazil Remains the World’s Superpower.
PATRICE GREANVILLE—The Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro are simply a unique cultural phenomenon. Samba Schools do not teach Samba! A samba school (Portuguese: Escola de samba) is a dancing, marching, and drumming (Samba Enredo) club. They practice and often perform in a huge square-compounds (“quadras de samba”) and are devoted to practicing and exhibiting samba, an African-Brazilian dance and drumming style. Although the word “school” is in the name, samba schools do not offer instruction. Samba schools have a strong community basis and are traditionally associated with a particular neighborhood. They are often seen to affirm the cultural validity of the Afro-Brazilian heritage in contrast to the mainstream education system.

PEPE ESCOBAR—Now the die is cast – and crystal clear: It’s social democracy against neo-fascism. Socially inclusive programs, civil society involved in setting public policy, the fight for equality versus autocracy, state institutions linked to militias, racism and hate against all minorities. Bernie Sanders and Jeremy Corbyn, to their credit, have offered Lula their unconditional support. In contrast, Steve Bannon is losing sleep, qualifying Lula as “the poster boy of the globalist Left” across the world.

RAINER SHEA—The global capitalist class, which has welcomed Bolsonaro’s neoliberal presidency, is turning the earth into one big sacrifice zone. Climate change is going to create what a recent U.N. report has described as “climate apartheid,” where the world’s entire population aside from an insulated global elite are pushed into poverty or made into refugees amid the environmental collapse. As the middle classes within the core imperialist nations become part of the victimized population in this emerging dystopia, they will experience the same loss of stability and dignity that the colonized people have.

PEPE ESCOBAR—The real story confirms what Lula said in the interview. On August 10, a group of 70 wealthy farmers, all Bolsonaro voters, organized on WhatsApp a “Day of Fire” in the Altamira region in the vast state of Pará. This happens to be the region with the highest number of wildfires in Brazil – infested with aggressive rural developers who are devoted to massive, hardcore deforestation; they’re invested in land occupation and a no-quarter war against landless peasants and small agricultural producers. “Day of Fire” was supposed to support Bolsonaro’s drive to finish off with official monitoring and erase fines over one of the “Bs” of the BBB lobby that elected him (Beef, Bullet, Bible).
