DN—We remember the remarkable life of Harry Belafonte, the pioneering actor, singer and civil rights activist, who died at his home on Tuesday in New York at the age of 96. The son of Jamaican immigrants, Belafonte rose to stardom in the 1950s and became the first artist to sell a million records with his album Calypso. He was also the first African American actor to win an Emmy. Along with his growing fame, Belafonte became deeply involved in the civil rights movement. One of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s closest confidants, he helped to organize the March on Washington in 1963 and frequently raised money to bail activists out of jail and fund their activities throughout the South.

While the audience of cowards squirms, angry at the man who actually puts the panel of media worthies on the spot, the henchmen and worms at the service of the establishment harass and obstruct Jose Vega. A disgusting spectacle of cravenness and duplicity that says a lot about why this system is deservedly doomed.

P. GREANVILLE—Chris Hedges is not terribly impressed with RFK Jr’s spiel, as it relies on shopworn myths of exceptionalism. For one thing, says Hedges, the US was founded by aristocrats who feared democracy, and took care to establish a solid system of control to prevent the hoi polloi, and even women, from using the voting franchise to alter the balance between classes. Secondly, planning to appeal to Democrats without criticizing the party is a recipe for failure. The Dems have not been just accomplices, but the main actors in betraying the country’s working masses, and pushing the world to the edge of nuclear war.

DEBORAH ARMSTRONG—“We were clearing the central part of Bakhmut, clearing civilian houses,” an unidentified member of Wagner said. “The civilians started running out of the basement. They said there were children in the basement. There was an 11-year-old child, a little girl, frightened. During the evacuation, they opened fire on us and a sniper was shooting at us. It was not in our direction, but directed at the little girl. During the evacuation we had to cover her with flak jackets, but she survived and was taken away.
