JEFF J BROWN—A SIMPLY AMAZING REPORT BY OUR CHINA CORRESPONDENT AND ASSOCIATE EDITOR JEFF J BROWN. Although China did not qualify for the World Cup, it still sent more than 100,000 fans to Russia—more than several major countries combined. Postscript: This article says each Chinese football fan visiting Russia will spend an average of ¥30,000 each, or about €/$4,500. That comes to a total of ¥3 billion, or about €/$450 million – almost a half a billion dollars pumped into the Russian GDP. Four thousand Chinese are arriving in Russia every day, on 20 direct flights. In an international poll, 87% of the Chinese want to watch the World Cup, more than Russians, Brazilians, Italians and US citizens. The love affair between the peoples of Russia and China continues to flourish.

Silly questions? If China is so powerful, why don’t I, an American, see Chinese influence?
11 minutes readYou don’t see more than 1 million Chinese visitors each year coming to the US? You don’t see all major tourist sites and stores in the US have signs in Chinese language? Each Chinese tourist would spend $6,000-$7,000 in America, imagine how many jobs have been created by that. You don’t do any shopping and see how many goods are imported from China? Do you know that China will purchase about 7,000 Boeing aircraft in the next 20 years (China has already bought thousands of Boeing planes), is there any other country that contributes so much to America’s economy?

JOHN WALSH—It is no exaggeration to say that the Singapore Summit is the biggest step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula since President Dwight Eisenhower lived up to his 1952 campaign promise to “go to Korea” and end Truman’s deeply unpopular war, which had claimed millions of Korean lives, 1 million Chinese lives and tens of thousands of American ones. Ike ended that genocidal war, which had slaughtered 20% of the population of North Korea primarily due to bombing and chemical weapons. An armistice was negotiated quickly and so the killing stopped, but a formal treaty of peace proved politically impossible. (Ike, the peacemaker, was criticized by the media for being inarticulate and stupid and for spending too much time on the golf course. And he had a mistress. Sound familiar? But he brought peace.)

ROBIN DAVERMAN—To say that China is a democracy is over-simplification – because China always believed that “we will practice democracy among people who pick up trash, and we’ll be authoritarian among people who only want free popsicles.” From 5,000 years ago to today, every year, hundreds of millions of people face annual flooding of the major river systems, and they have to choose – do you stay home to protect your own property, or do you go work on the common dam which can be both dangerous and backbreaking. The guys who come for free popsicle or the guys who come to pick up the trash. Your own survival depends on it.
