Venezuela Coup Attempt Proves that Capitalism is a Cancer that Survives Through Violence and Propaganda

America's chosen Trojan Horse in Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, among supporters.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]merica’s recent moves towards a coup in Venezuela are being carried out through the same methods that global capitalism uses to keep itself in place: media propaganda, political sabotage of opponents, and acts of violence.

The Trump administration’s motives for trying to oust Maduro are transparently motivated by corporate profit. This week, Senator Marco Rubio openly explained the business motivations behind the Venezuela coup he supports, having tweeted: “[The] biggest buyers of Venezuelan oil are Valero Energy and Chevron. Refining heavy crude from #Venezuela supports great jobs in Gulf Coast. For the sake of these U.S. workers I hope they will begin working with administration of President Guaido and cut off illegitimate Maduro regime.” Unsurprisingly, Venezuela’s self-declared new “president” Juan Guardio has already tried to privatize Venezuela’s oil operations to benefit the United States.

Guaido’s attempt to usurp Maduro at the behest of the American government is not just an act of illegal foreign interference in a sovereign nation. It’s also being justified to the Venezuelan people through political fraud. Guaido is basing his claim as the rightful leader of Venezuela on the narrative that Maduro stole the election of last May, which would make Maduro an illegitimate leader. But this narrative is founded on lies. International observers from 40 different countries judged the election to be transparent, despite the U.S.’ refusal to accept the results.

Since Chavismo took power twenty years ago, the U.S. has been demonizing and slandering Venezuela’s legitimate and elected leadership, interfering in its politics, and inflicting terrorism against its citizenry. The CIA’s attempted coup against Hugo Chavez in 2002 has been followed by economic sanctions on Venezuela that target the country’s population, campaigns from Saudi Arabia and Western corporations to sabotage Venezuela’s economy, the pumping of millions of dollars into Venezuelan opposition groups, threats by the Trump administration to invade Venezuela militarily, and American support for violent protests against Maduro’s government.

Since all-out war with Venezuela isn’t regarded by the U.S. government as a first choice, the regime change operation against Maduro has taken on the form of America’s recent regime change campaigns in Syria and Ukraine, wherein America has given support to militant opposition groups while conducting a campaign of propaganda and political sabotage. It’s been an underhanded regime change operation that’s largely hidden from the American people, which makes it easy for the U.S. government to pass it off as a legitimate revolution.

This is what makes it ironic when American supporters of capitalism try to point to Venezuela as proof that socialism doesn’t work. Firstly, their claim completely misrepresents Venezuela’s political situation; Chavez and Maduro haven’t brought socialism, they’ve only reformed capitalism by enacting social welfare policies within the capitalist system. These policies have lifted many Venezuelans out of poverty. And many more of them would now be in good economic standing if their leaders were to do away with capitalism entirely.

Secondly, Venezuela’s economic crisis was created not by this fictitious implementation of “socialism,” but by the acts of Western warfare that I mention above. America’s tactic of sabotaging Venezuela, and then blaming “socialism” for Venezuela’s problems, reflects on the similarly dishonest and coercive methods that capitalism uses to maintain its control.

Whether the capitalist class has created a mass propaganda campaign to discredit socialism, or used money to control the political system, or sent police to put down protests, it’s mirrored what they rely on for projects like the Venezuela regime change operation: only the dirty tricks.

The capitalists are still in power because they have the money to crush their opponents and flood society with their propaganda. We’re ruled by an illegitimate dictatorship of capital that should have been overthrown long ago, and that would be quickly replaced if the political and media establishments weren’t designed to exclude critics of capitalism.

Thankfully, this underlying weakness of capitalism is coming to a head. Even as the U.S./NATO empire uses a full array of its weapons in this coup attempt, the empire’s decay is apparent. As an editorial this week from Strategic Culture assesses:

Venezuela will be no push over, however. The country’s defense forces are standing with Maduro’s government, and defense minister Vladimir Padrino has condemned “US aggression”. Venezuela’s Supreme Court has declared the opposition’s claim to the presidency as unconstitutional.

Abroad, Venezuela has the support of several neighboring countries, including Mexico, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Cuba.

Russia has emerged as an important international power calling for respect for Venezuela’s sovereignty and the legitimacy of President Maduro. Other foreign supporters include China, Iran and Turkey, who have also denounced the US-led offensive against Venezuela…the events may show that the Uncle [Sam] is now a decrepit old tyrant whose malign designs no longer match the multipolar reality of today’s world.

As we hope for these factors to restrain the American empire, let’s work to end the capitalist system that let this empire come into existence in the first place.

Pushing back against the imperial censors: Taking NewsGuard at its word.

When free speech dies, injustice and death will triumph.

Our post exposing NewsGuard on January 11 (2019):

[su_panel background=”#ebf0f5″ radius=”7″] How a NeoCon-Backed “Fact Checker” Plans to Wage War on Independent Media[/su_panel]

elicited some very illuminating comments. The one featured here, by our brave reader Subhuti2, could be a model of how to push back against this vile enterprise. He deserves plenty of imitation.

I went to the Newguard website, and see that they have a Feedback page. So great that they are so transparent and open. So I sent this feedback:

I noticed that your organization is the guardian of truth….this is very commendable.

Usually, when I am reading the news, I look at the story, and then I look at the story behind the story, and look at who is telling the story, and for whose benefit. For example, during the destruction of Libya, CNN reported that China, which had I think 30,000 workers doing projects in Libya, was called out by CNN, because of their large military budget, at the time 90 billion dollars. That is a large amount of money!

The story went on to point out that the US military budget was slated to be cut.

The only issue with that $90 billion was that the US budget at the time was well over $500 billion and rather than being cut, it was raised to now over $700 billion. While China’s military budget has also grown, it is still only about 1/5 of the US military budget. And while China sent 2-3 ships to rescue its workers, which was called by CNN, a ‘dangerous projection of Chinese power’, the US has a whole fleet of dozens if not more than 100 ships, including huge aircraft carriers, of course, to guarantee the peace.

The problem with that narrative is that CNN aided and abetted the total destruction of Libya, which had free health care and education. It is now infested with terrorists. And slave markets. Thanks CNN. Goebbels would be proud of you.

My questions are as follows:

Why do you give CNN a green A rating, when sites that told the real truth get red bad ratings?
And also, who funds you to allow such perfidy?
And finally, have you no shame?

Please get back to me with your answers. And this time, at least be honest.

The real answers are:

*Because you support wars for profit.
*Because Lies sell wars for profit.
* No, we have no shame. We have sold our souls to the devil of war and we just don’t care as long as we make money off of this corrupt, destructive system.

NeoCons Test Drive Newest Weapon to Crush Indie Media, Put MintPress in Their Crosshairs

Actually there is no need to imagine. It's happening already.

"The website [MintPress] does not disclose its liberal bent. For example, a January 2019 story was titled, “New Senate anti-BDS Bill Unconstitutional and Ineffective at Curbing Boycotts.” … Would you like to comment about making any political leanings transparent to online readers?" — Question submitted by Newsguard to MintPress News

MINNEAPOLIS —  A recently founded venture claiming to be “a news rating agency” is making its big breakout in 2019 by claiming to be an authority at the forefront in the fight against “fake news.” Newsguard — which describes itself as an organization dedicated to “restoring trust and accountability” and using “journalism to fight false news, misinformation, and disinformation” — has begun targeting independent and alternative media organizations, including MintPress News, with a questionnaire developed to frame its victims as being on the political fringe and lacking professionalism and journalistic integrity in order to rank them as “unreliable” news sites.

J. Kamin

Jennie Kamin, a reporter for Newsguard as well as an associate producer at CBS News, contacted me on Monday with a list of eight loaded questions that were crafted to put me on the defensive and undermine MintPress’ credibility from the get-go. Not only that, but the questions also frame MintPress as having a secret agenda aimed at hiding its ownership and funding.

Since Ms. Kamin had begun her work by failing to go to our website to find the obvious answers to her questions, it seemed clear that she was less interested in finding facts than in casting aspersions. As a consequence, it seemed that my answers wouldn’t really matter — except perhaps as they might play into her prejudgments. For example, one of her questions asked about MintPress’ funding, which is actually explained on each page and article on our website. Ironically, the questions regarding our funding came just as MintPress is concluding its semi-annual fundraising campaign to raise $25,000. Another question from Kamin referred to photos on our website not being properly attributed, even though each and every photo on our site is clearly captioned and attributed to its source.

Below: MintPress request for help. We have run similar alerts asking readers to sign up with our bulletin, and sometimes donations, as it is clear the "system" is out to destroy all sources of non-official opinion and fact.

Below, Mnar has provided Newsguard’s questions in full (bolded) and her complete responses:

Dear Mnar,

I am doing a site review of MintPressNews.com for NewsGuard, a news rating agency. I have a few questions about the website’s editorial practices and policies. I appreciate your help in meeting my Wednesday deadline. For your reference, our website is www.newsguardtechnologies.com.

How does the website generate revenue?

MintPress News is reader supported journalism. We receive donations through our website, Paypal and Bitcoin. We hold semi-annual fundraising drives as well as bi-annual membership drives to sustain our main operation expenses. You can find our current major fundraising campaign here. In addition, we accrue some revenue from selling advertising. This is made clear on each page of our website. We receive no funding from any government or former government officials, from any member or former member of another media organization, such as the Wall Street Journal, or any organization involved in lobbying for against any particular legislation, unlike NewsGuard.

Would you like to comment regarding BuzzFeed News‘ reporting that Odeh Muhawesh could be involved with the financing, along with the claim that Muhawesh has demonstrated pro-Iran and pro-Assad beliefs?

The BuzzFeed article you are referencing is a clear example of unprofessional journalism that fails to report on the issue at hand and rather create an Islamophobic character assassination of myself and my family to discredit our in-depth reporting on the war in Syria. During this time, our journalists were receiving threats for conducting interviews with average Syrians, doctors and even rebels on the ground in Ghoutha where the 2013 chemical weapons attack took place that nearly led the US in a direct military confrontation with the Syrian government.

These interviews showcased an alternative to the corporate mainstream media’s narrative that it was indeed Assad gassing his own people. Our interviews, in which we make clear that their assertions were “claims”, allege that perhaps the chemical weapons attack could have taken place at the hands of Al-Qaeda terrorists. Because this chemical attack was being used as a push for war and was allegedly the “red line” that Assad had crossed to initiate a US intervention, MintPress’ reporting on these interviews attracted mass media attention. Our coverage about al-Qaeda rebels using chemical weapons was later validated by former UN inspectors, MIT rocket scientists, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh and WikiLeaks diplomatic cables.

Instead of reporting on who could be behind this chemical weapons attack, Buzzfeed unprofessionally targeted myself and my family to discredit our reporting. They created a profile of Mr. Muhawesh based on little more than assumptions and hearsay in an attempt to paint us as Pro-Assad or Pro-Iran. Mr. Muhawesh has never put a cent into MintPress News. He has a very limited role relegated 100% to business advising on dealing with human resources related issues and vendors. In terms of his personal political beliefs, they are completely irrelevant to MintPress News as he is not editorially involved in our work. In fact, all articles produced by MintPress are pitched and chosen by writers not editors which gives them full editorial control over their reporting.

We do not wish to speak on behalf of Mr. Muhawesh regarding his political views; however, he is a registered Republican and does not read our content as he claims it has too much a liberal bent and he has consistently voted for issues that MintPress News has opposed.

Some stories omit references to reliable sources for information. An article from January 2019 was titled, “Iran Offers an Alternative to US Occupation In Afghanistan,” quoted Iranian rear admiral and secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, several times throughout the article and did not provide a source for the quotations. Another article from the same month titled, “How War Propaganda in the Film Industry Really Works” claimed the Department of Defense and the Pentagon were seeking involvement in pro-war, Hollywood productions. The article provides no evidence for the assertion. Would you like to comment?

Both articles you reference were not written or produced by MintPress News. If you would have viewed the articles in their entirety, you would have seen that the articles include a disclaimer stating that they were not produced by MintPress News. MintPress News sometimes republishes articles from other websites. We have no editorial control over their content and are not accountable for their claims. If you would like further information about the article you referenced, we suggest contacting the author and publication that produced it, not one of the many websites that republished it.

We include a disclaimer in these articles stating as much along with a link to the source.

Stories published in our Daily Digests section are chosen based on the interest of our readers. They are republished from a number of sources, and are not produced by MintPress News. The views expressed in these articles are the author’s own and do not necessarily reflect MintPress News editorial policy.

In November 2016, the website published a story run from American Herald Tribune titled, “Media Blackout As Millions Of Muslims March Against ISIS In Iraq.” Snopes found the article to be false, claiming the story was based on a pilgrimage in Karbala, Iraq that was not a direct protest to the Islamic State. Would you like to comment?

I did create a video response to the critique of this article and Snopes removed its reference to MintPress. In addition, Buzzfeed refused to comment when I reached out to them on their critique. https://www.mintpressnews.com/islam-isis-buzzfeed-what-youre-not-being-told/223426/

However, this article was not written by MintPress News. As with many other smaller news outlets, and indeed, larger ones, MintPress sometimes republishes articles from other websites. We have no editorial control over their content and are not accountable for their claims. We include a disclaimer in these articles stating as much:

Stories published in our Daily Digests section are chosen based on the interest of our readers. They are republished from a number of sources, and are not produced by MintPress News. The views expressed in these articles are the author’s own and do not necessarily reflect MintPress News editorial policy.

We also include a link to the original source of the article. If you would like further information about the article you referenced, we suggest contacting the author and publication that produced it, not one of the many websites that republished it.

Some articles do not distinguish between news and opinion. For example, a January 2019 article titled “Amos Oz Remembered: The Sharp Talons of a Zionist ‘Dove,’” referred to the subject of the article, a writer, as Under this disguise, however, “…a Zionist, who for decades whitewashed horrific crimes committed by Israel against the people of Palestine.” Another article from September 2018 titled, “As Twitter Purges Real Iranians, US-Backed MEK Cult Revealed to Run Anti-Iran Troll Farm,” said that Iran is frequently “subject to double standards.” Would you like to comment about distinguishing between news and opinion content?

Articles do indeed distinguish between news and opinion. Much clearer in fact than many other websites. We most often label opinion articles with an “Opinion” label featured directly above the article headline. Had you bothered to scroll to the bottom of the article, you’d have also seen that Opinion pieces also feature the following disclaimer:

The views expressed in this article are the author’s own and do not necessarily reflect MintPress News editorial policy.

The website does not disclose its liberal bent. For example, a January 2019 story was titled, “New Senate anti-BDS Bill Unconstitutional and Ineffective at Curbing Boycotts.” Another story from the same month titled, “Elizabeth Warren and the Military Industrial Complex,” characterized Senator Warren’s recent foreign policy platform as “a last-minute propaganda blitzkrieg to paint herself as a dove.” Would you like to comment about making any political leanings transparent to online readers?

MintPress News is non-partisan. Our staff and readers come from an array of political backgrounds from Democrat, Libertarian and progressive. Our journalism brings all political walks of life together by reporting on issues relating to the infringement of our civil liberties and foreign policy that contributes to the exploitation of people and their resources abroad. These are not “liberal” issues but the kind of journalism that our First Amendment was meant to protect as they promote the interest of ‘we the people’ not the oligarchy.

We strongly advocate for an uncensored, unfettered and uncontrolled free marketplace of ideas. Readers are intelligent enough to engage the multitude of information readily available on the internet, and no individual, organization or government entity should have the right to restrict access to information; it is a fundamental and intrinsic aspect of freedom, democracy, and the First Amendment.

The website does not attribute sources for images. Would you like to comment?

MintPress News hosts over 25,000 images on our website and all are in fact attributed to their source. If you look at each page, the feature photos are attributed at the bottom of the article.

As some of your previous questions have shown, you failed to actually look at our web pages and apparently did not even scroll to the bottom of articles. If you had, you would have seen that all photos are attributed.

The website does not disclose ownership details. Would you like to comment about making this information transparent to online readers?

I am the sole founder and owner of MintPress News, as MintPress is a registered LLC. There have never been any co-owners in MintPress News.  This information is public and has never been concealed.

In addition, MintPress is reader-supported journalism. We receive donations through our website, Paypal and Bitcoin. We hold semi-annual fundraising drives as well as semi-annual membership drives to sustain our main operation expenses. You can find our current major fundraising campaign here.

Thank you.

This tactic of framing questions to put the interviewee on the defensive is commonly used as the springboard to launch an attack on certain individuals or organizations based on character or lack of evidence rather than fairly hearing them out. It was clear this was no ordinary fact-gathering interview. This is further supported by the fact that some of the allegations for which Kamin sought comment were clearly untrue, such as her claim that there are no photo attributions even though all photos used on MintPress are clearly attributed on the site.

As it was obvious the questions were poised to frame MintPress as a fringe “fake news” organization that has a hidden agenda and is concealing information about its ownership and agenda. Yet, upon a quick review of its background, it soon became clear that Newsguard’s commitment to being a fair watchdog of legitimate journalism was highly suspect. Indeed, upon further investigation, Newsguard was found to be funded by, advised by and partnered with some of the nation’s most influential billionaires, neoconservative think tanks, war profiteers and tech giants.

Perhaps it is also ironic that this organization claiming to be independent chose the reporter who contacted me, Jennie Kamin, to conduct the page’s review of MintPress. Kamin is an associate producer for CBS News and was formerly a delegate for Hillary Clinton at the 2008 Texas State Democratic Convention. Notably, MintPress has long been critical of Hillary Clinton, her political corruption, and her support for regime change abroad and perpetual war.

Furthermore, one of the two co-founders of Newsguard — Louis Gordon Crovitz — is tied to Wall Street, the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute and the upper echelons of the corporate media. As such, Crovitz is the last person one would expect to find promoting any legitimate effort to “restore trust and accountability” in journalism.

So what is a former Wall Street executive, and a member of neoconservative think tanks that draft war policies with war hawks like John Bolton and Paul Wolfowitz, doing in founding a purported journalism organization that is “restoring trust and accountability?

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ased on our findings released in an exclusive report, it is clear that Newsguard’s agenda is to do the exact opposite of what they publicly claim and to instead control the free flow of information that poses a threat to the war establishment and the corporations that fund them. Indeed, as MintPressnew report on Newsguard shows, its advisory board boasts several several characters directly or indirectly threatened by Mint Press‘ watchdog journalism, including a former CIA and NSA director and a former director of Homeland Security and its lead investor is one of the most powerful and controversial advertising and PR agencies that regularly works for the government of Saudi Arabia and powerful corporations like Bayer/Monsanto. Are we supposed to believe that a group being advised by former intelligence agency directors and funded by such powerful monied interests is really interested in “restoring trust and accountability” in journalism?

Apart from this clear cynical agenda and conflict of interest, the timing of Newsguard’s targeting of independent journalism couldn’t be more telling as independent media is facing a new wave of censorship by tech giants like Facebook and Google who have partnered up with the very neoconservative think tanks Crovitz is part of to suppressive alternative voices. It is thus unsurprising that Newsguard — as MintPress uncovered — recently announced plans to team up with Silicon Valley giants and social media sites to make their rankings a compulsory component of internet use throughout the entire country that is already targeting public libraries, schools, universities and all future Microsoft products.

Perhaps Kamin, Crovitz and other Newsguard employees would like to comment on their own glaring credibility problems and conflicts of interest?

The Year of Putin-Nazi Paranoia

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s my regular readers will probably recall, according to my personal, pseudo-Chinese zodiac, 2017 was “The Year of the Headless Liberal Chicken.” This year, having given it considerable thought, and having consulted the I Ching, and assorted other oracles, I’m designating 2018 “The Year of Putin-Nazi Paranoia.”

Not that 2017 wasn’t already paranoid. It was. It was completely paranoid, and otherwise clinically batshit crazy. But 2018 has been batshit crazier. It started out with the Internet companies that control the flow of information that most of us now perceive as “reality” launching an all-out War on Dissent, purportedly to protect the public from “divisive” and “confusing” content, and other forms of Russian “influencing.”

Twitter started sending out scary emails warning customers that there was “reason to believe” that they had “followed,” “retweeted,” or “liked the content of” accounts “connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization.” Facebook launched its own Ministry of Truth, manned by “a dedicated counter-terrorism team” of “former intelligence and law-enforcement officials” (also known as The Atlantic Council, NATO’s unofficial propaganda wing). Google stepped up its covert deranking of insufficiently Russia-hating and other “non-authoritative” websites.

This Orwellian corporate censorship campaign was enthusiastically welcomed by liberals and other Russia-and-Trump-obsessives, who by this time were already completely convinced that secret Russian Facebook agents were conspiring to transform the Western masses into zombified, Russia-loving neo-Nazis by means of some sort of irresistible Putin-Nazi hypno-technology that would melt their brains to oatmeal the second they clicked on one of those dancing cat GIFs.

But the paranoia was just getting started. By the Spring, professional Putin-Naziologists were issuing warnings explaining that anyone using words like “globalist,” “globalism,” or “global capitalism” was an anti-Semite. There was no such thing as “globalism,” they told us. “Globalist” was just Nazi codespeak for “JEW!” Moreover, anyone criticizing “the media,” or mentioning “banks,” “Wall Street,” or “Hollywood,” or, God help you, making fun of “George Soros,” was clearly a Russia-loving, Sieg-heiling Nazi.

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]eanwhile, in London, Blairites were busy combing through six year-old Facebook posts in an effort to prove that Jeremy Corbyn had transformed the British Labour Party into his personal Putin-Nazi death cult. The Guardian published over one hundred articles smearing Corbyn as an anti-Semite and “linking” Labour to anti-Semitism. The BBC jacked up the Russia paranoia, doctoring Corbyn’s hat on TV to make it appear more insidiously Slavic. Owen Jones sprang to Corbyn’s defense, explaining that, yes, the Labour Party was a disgusting hive of anti-Semites, but they were doing their utmost to root out the Nazis, ban all criticism of the IDF, and reverse the mass exodus of Jews from London.

Ian56—Putin's secret weapon in Britain.

All this was happening in the wake of the notorious Novichok Porridge and Perfume Attacks, allegedly perpetrated by two totally incompetent, pot-smoking, prostitute-banging “assassins” that Putin personally dispatched to Salisbury to miserably fail to take out their target and then waltz around getting photographed by every CCTV camera in Great Britain. According to the corporate media, Putin tried to cover the crimes of these Jason Bourne-like GRU assassins by ordering his network of Putin-Nazi Twitter bots to flood the Internet with disinformation. Sky News captured and mercilessly interrogated one of these alleged “Twitter bots,” who it turned out was just a feisty British pensioner by the name of Ian, or at least that’s what Putin wants us to believe!

Back in America, millions of liberals and other Russia-and-Trump-obsessives were awaiting the Putin-Nazi Apocalypse, which despite the predictions of Resistance pundits had still, by the Summer, failed to materialize. The corporate media were speculating that Putin’s latest “secret scheme” was for Trump to destroy the Atlantic alliance by arriving late for the G7 meeting. Or maybe Putin’s secret scheme was to order Trump to sadistically lock up a bunch of migrants in metal cages, exactly as Obama had done before him … but these were special Nazi cages! And Trump was separating mothers and children, which, as General Michael Hayden reminded us, was more or less exactly the same as Auschwitz! Paul Krugman had apparently lost it, and was running around the offices of The New York Times shrieking that “America as we know it is finished!” Soros had been smuggled back into Europe to single-handedly thwart the Putin-Nazi plot to “dominate the West,” which he planned to do by canceling the Brexit (which Putin had obviously orchestrated) and overthrowing the elected government of Italy (which, according to Soros, was a Putin-Nazi front).

As if that wasn’t paranoia-inducing enough, suddenly, Trump flew off to Helisnki to personally meet with the Devil Himself. The neoliberal establishment went totally apeshit. A columnist for The New York Times predicted that Trump, Putin, Le Pen, the AfD, and other such Nazis were secretly forming something called “the Alliance of Authoritarian and Reactionary States,” and intended to disband the European Union, and NATO, and impose international martial law and start ethnically cleansing the West of migrants. That, or Trump and Putin were simply using the summit as cover to attend some Nazi-equestrian homosexual orgy, which The Times took pains to illustrate by creating a little animated film depicting Trump and Putin as lovers. In any event, Jonathan Chait was certain that Trump had been a “Russian intelligence asset” since at least as early as 1987, and was going to Helsinki to “meet his handler.”

In the wake of the summit, the neoliberal Resistance, like some multi-headed mythical creature in the throes of acute amphetamine psychosis, started spastically jabbering about “treason” and “traitors,” and more or less demanding that Trump be tried, and taken out and shot on the White House lawn. A frenzy of neo-McCarthyism followed. Liberals started accusing people of being “traitorous agents of Trump and Moscow,” and openly calling for a CIA coup, because we were “facing a national security emergency!” A devastating Russian cyber-attack was due to begin at any moment. National Intelligence Director Dan Coats personally assured the Associated Press that the little “Imminent Russia Attack” lights he had on his desk were “blinking red.”

Into this maelstrom of monomania boldly slunk the Charlottesville Nazis, who had resolved to reenact their infamous national white supremacist tikki torch conclave right across the street from the White House this year. The Resistance and Antifa had been promoting this event as the long anticipated Putin-Nazi uprising, and Kristallnacht II, and other such nonsense, so it was a bit of a letdown when only twenty or thirty rather timid Nazis turned up. It felt like maybe the Great Nazi Panic of 2018 was finally over.

But no, of course it wasn’t over. The Nazis had just gone underground. Weeks later, right there on national television, a Jewish-Mexican-American Nazi was spotted transmitting secret Nazi hand signals to her Nazi co-conspirators. One of them, a U.S. Coast Guard member, then relayed the secret Nazi signal to … well, it wasn’t entirely clear, perhaps the Underground Putin-Nazi Navy, which was steaming toward the Florida coast hidden in the eye of Hurricane Florence.

By the Autumn, with the midterm elections fast approaching, the Putin-Nazi terrorists finally struck. It soon became clear that those secret hand signs were just parts of a much larger Trumpian conspiracy to “embolden” a couple of totally psychotic wackos to unleash their hatred on the public. Wacko Number One accomplished this by mailing a series of non-exploding explosive devices to various prominent members of the neoliberal Resistance. Wacko Number Two stormed into a synagogue in Pittsburgh and murdered a lot of people. While the corporate media were unable to prove that Trump, Putin, or possibly Jeremy Corbyn, had personally “emboldened” these wackos, clearly, they had been “emboldened” by somebody, and thus were definitely domestic Putin-Nazi “terrorists,” and not just mentally disturbed individuals … like all the other mentally-disturbed individuals who go around murdering people all the time.

In November, at last, the tide began to turn. Despite the relentlesschaos campaign to undermine faith in American democracy” that the Russian bots and Nazis were waging, the Democrats managed to win back the House and rescue America from “the brink of fascism.” Apparently, the War on Dissent was working, because the millions of Black people that the Russians had brainwashed into not voting for Clinton in 2016 with those Jesus-doesn’t-like-masturbation memes had all miraculously been deprogrammed.

Liberals celebrated by singing hymns to Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller and compiling lists of people to subpoena to testify before congressional committees in what will someday be known as “the Hitlergate Hearings.” The New York Times even published a “roadmap” that Mueller and his team can follow to “send incriminating evidence directly to Congress,” thus protecting this “evidence” from the Justice Department, which is totally infested with Russians and Nazis!

But it’s not quite time for liberals to break out the vuvuzelas and Trump effigies yet … or to let up on the paranoia. The Putin-Nazi menace is still out there! The Internet is still literally crawling with all sorts of deviant, division sowing content! And now the Russian bots have brainwashed the French into staging these unruly Yellow Vest protests, and the Putin-Nazis have “weaponized” humor, and the economy, and religion, and Brexit, and Wikileaks, and pretty much everything else you can imagine. So this is no time to switch off the television, and log off the Internet, and start thinking critically … or to forget for one moment that THE NAZIS ARE COMING, and that A DEVASTATING RUSSIAN ATTACK IS IMMINENT!

So here’s wishing my Russia-and-Trump-obsessed readers a merry, teeth-clenching, anus-puckering Christmas and a somewhat mentally-healthier New Year! Me, I’m looking forward to discovering how batshit crazy things can get … I have a feeling we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Revolutionary wisdom

Words from an Irish patriot—

“There are three kinds of violence. The first, the mother of all the others, is the institutional violence, the one that legalizes and perpetuates the dominations, the oppressions and the exploitations, the one that crushes and flattens millions of men in its silent and well oiled wheels. The second is revolutionary violence, which arises from the desire to abolish the first. The third is repressive violence, the object of which is to stifle the second by making itself the auxiliary and the accomplice of the first violence, the one that engenders all the others. There is no worse hypocrisy to call violence only the second, by pretending to forget the first, which gives birth to it, and the third which kills it. ”

Dom Helder Camara, Brazilian Archbishop and liberation theologian

How the World Sees the Caravan

The ferocious terrorists described by Trump.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]round 80% of the asylum seekers’ caravan heading towards the U.S.-Mexico border come, according to BuzzFeed, from Honduras. They are fleeing intolerable conditions in their country following the U.S.-supported coup against President Manuel Zelaya that happened nine years ago. HuffPost reports that  “thousands of indigenous activists, peasant leaders, trade unionists, journalists, environmentalists, judges, opposition political candidates, human rights activists, and others murdered since a military coup ousted the democratically elected president Manuel Zelaya in 2009.” They are fleeing a hell-hole.

In 2012 there were 20 homicides a day in Honduras, which has a population of nine million. Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world, as well as the highest rate of sexual violence. The violence mainly results from urban gangs’ drug trafficking and competition for global markets. MS-13 and the 18th Street Gang (both founded in Los Angeles) are entrenched in Tegucigalpa (the capital), and the industrial city of San Pedro Sula.  Many asylum seekers have been threatened by such gangs and are fleeing from them with the same sense of terror as those trying to escape government death-squads elsewhere in Central America.

One might argue that the U.S. has, through its support for the coup nine years ago, patronage of the current regime, and its vast market for cannabis, heroin and cocaine, helped produce this desperate exodus of Central Americans to the border. People with a hard choice: stay home, let the kids get recruited into a gang, killing or get killed while at least drawing steady pay. Or flee north, facing dangerous challenges, and pray for North American compassion at the end of the road. Anything for safety, food and shelter.

The slow-moving caravan of several thousand people is a latter-day Children’s Crusade. About half of it consists of boys and girls, accompanied or non-accompanied by parents. Donald Trump–citing law enforcement officials–wants you to believe the oncoming horde (which he calls the “lawless caravan”) is ridden with MS-13 gangsters and criminals who have been convicted of crimes ranging from armed robbery to sexual assault. He says “lots of people are saying” George Soros is funding the caravan–it could, that is to say, be linked to what fascists consider “the radical left.”

On Oct. 22 the U.S. commander-in-chief, widely understood in the world to be a bullying buffoon, declared, “Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in.” Thus he announced in advance, to all prospective asylum applicants: “Nobody’s coming in.” And he says he will deploy “anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000” U.S. troops to defend the border against this “invasion.”

No show of Merkel-like compassion. No echo of the Statue of Liberty’s inscription: “Give me your tired and your poor…” Just rage against the brown, the desperately poor, vilifying them to produce warm fuzzy feelings in your racist supporters…

Karen Tumulty on CNN calls Trump our “stuntsman in chief” for threatening to deploy not just National Guard and border control but regular troops.  (One wonders what the troops will think about their deployment on such an unusual mission.) Should anyone so much as throw rocks at a U.S. soldier, Trump has declared that the soldier will respond in self-defense, meaning by gunfire since ” a rock is not much different than a gun.”

Think: rock-thrower. What images come up? David and Goliath. Palestinian boys with their sling-shots, responding to Israeli occupation. What happens to the boys? Too often, they get shot dead. Trump’s thinking sounds very Israeli: when the weak use the weapons of the weak, you shoot them dead. And positively boast about the deployment of “disproportionate force.” Because you want the world to FEAR you, always, big-time.

Plainly Trump hopes to rally his base over this issue before tomorrow’s balloting. He is surely familiar with Hermann Goering’s dictum: “All you have to do is tell [the people] they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.” Trump-backed TV ads depict the mass asylum bid as an “invasion” and Democrats who support as wanting the country flooded with rapists, murderers and drug traffickers.

Will the president’s manifest racism, ignorance, cruelty, and fear-mongering win his party victories tomorrow, or cost them? Polls show his racist rants are most popular in states with least immigration.  These fear tactics could produce a backlash; one hopes so. Or they could work. The world that rarely cares about U.S. midterm elections is paying keen attention to this one. Most rational people are hoping for the Democrats to take the House and stymie the Trump agenda, including plans for war with Iran.

Things to ponder

While our media prostitutes, many Hollywood celebs, and politicians and opinion shapers make so much noise about the still to be demonstrated damage done by the Russkies to our nonexistent democracy, this is what the sanctimonious US government has done overseas just since the close of World War 2. And this is what we know about. Many other misdeeds are yet to be revealed or documented.

Parting shot—a word from the editors
The Best Definition of Donald Trump We Have Found

In his zeal to prove to his antagonists in the War Party that he is as bloodthirsty as their champion, Hillary Clinton, and more manly than Barack Obama, Trump seems to have gone “play-crazy” — acting like an unpredictable maniac in order to terrorize the Russians into forcing some kind of dramatic concessions from their Syrian allies, or risk Armageddon. However, the “play-crazy” gambit can only work when the leader is, in real life, a disciplined and intelligent actor, who knows precisely what actual boundaries must not be crossed. That ain’t Donald Trump — a pitifully shallow and ill-disciplined man, emotionally handicapped by obscene privilege and cognitively crippled by white American chauvinism. By pushing Trump into a corner and demanding that he display his most bellicose self, or be ceaselessly mocked as a “puppet” and minion of Russia, a lesser power, the War Party and its media and clandestine services have created a perfect storm of mayhem that may consume us all. Up to You.

^3000US citizens have no real political representation.

We don't live in a democracy. And our freedom is disappearing fast.

I don't want to be ruled by hypocrites, whores, and war criminals.

What about you? Time to push back against the corporate oligarchy.

And its multitude of minions and lackeys.
