Ukranian Parliament bans communist symbols and legitimises nazi-collaborators

Jorge Martín | In Defence of Marxism

Ukrainische-Rada

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n April 9, the Ukrainian Rada passed 4 pieces of legislation submitted by the government that ban all symbols and propaganda of communism. After the law comes into effect, any monuments of communist figures which have not already been destroyed by fascist thugs in the last few months must be demolished. As well, any cities and streets which are named after communists are to be renamed.

Originally published on the Solidarity with the Anti-Fascist Resistance in Ukraine blog.

In order to justify this legislation, the ruling parties have resorted to the trick of equating Communism and Nazism. Thus, the preamble of the law says: “The draft law is aimed at condemning Communist and National Socialist (Nazi) criminal totalitarian regimes at the legislative level, implementation of the ban on public denial of the criminal nature of totalitarian regimes, banning public use of symbols and propaganda, the introduction of the State’s obligation to carry out an investigation and disclosure the crimes committed by members of these totalitarian regimes to prevent the recurrence of such crimes in the future, eliminate threats to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security of Ukraine, as well as for historical justice”

The law specifically mentions the “production”, “circulation” or “public utilisation” of symbols of these “totalitarian regimes”. The list of banned items includes the Soviet flag and anthem as well as monuments and historical plaques commemorating communist leaders. Penalties for violating the law range from five to 10 years. The anti-propaganda legislation is concerned with communist symbols from 1917 to 1991.

It also instructs the renaming of “city districts, parks, boulevards, streets, alleys, driveways, avenues, squares, squares, embankments, bridges or other objects, place names of settlements whose names contain the communist totalitarian symbols”.

Right Sector hooligans display Nazi symbols every chance they get. But the Western media always manages to miss them.

Of course, the condemnation of Nazism is just a fig leaf. In the same breath, the Rada passed the law “On Legal Status and to commemorate fighters for Ukraine’s independence in the twentieth century.” This law lists dozens of organisations which are recognised as Ukranian freedom fighters, including those which collaborated with the Nazis and carried out massacres of Jews, Poles and others, like the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Their symbols are widely used by far-right organisations and paramilitary fascists organisations which are now part of the state apparatus.

In fact, just a few days ago, the leader of the Right Sector, Dmytro Yarosh, who sees himself as the inheritor of the tradition of nazi-collaborator Stepan Bandera and his OUN-UPA organisations, was appointed as Advisor to the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces.

From now on, the symbols of these nazi-collaborating and genocidal organisations are protected by law: “Public denial of the legitimacy of the struggle for the independence of Ukraine in the twentieth century recognized insult to the memory of fighters for independence of Ukraine in the XX century constitutes disparagement of the Ukrainian people and is illegal.”

Right Sector mob and sympathizers holding up Stepan Bandera portraits. The man was a notorious Nazi collaborator.

Another organisation specifically mentioned by the law is the Hetmanate, a short lived anti-socialist German backed dictatorship which existed in 1918. With this, the re-writing of history by present day Ukrainian patriots reaches the absurd. The Hetmanate only existed because of German and Austro-Hungarian support. The commanding staff of its armed forces were all officers of the Russian Imperial Army who were defeated by the Bolsheviks, while the Hetmanate was widely opposed by Ukranians of different political persuasions at that time. That such an organisation can be considered as part of “the struggle for the independence of Ukraine” clearly demonstrates that in fact what is being legitimised and protected is anti-communism and anti-socialism.

To add insult to injury, these new laws also downgrade the May 9th Victory Day celebration by creating an additional Remembrance and Reconciliation Day in Ukraine on May 8 “to commemorate all the victims of World War II”. Presumably that means the celebration of those who died fighting on the Nazis’ side. The term Great Patriotic War will no longer be officially used. Victory Day will remain a holiday, but the remembrance ceremonies will not include any Soviet symbols, under the new law. Since it was the Soviet Union which played a decisive role in the defeat of Nazism, one wonders what will be the meaning of that celebration if Soviet symbols are banned.

The law against communist symbols was proposed by far right Radical Party leader Oleg Lyashko and passed with the votes of two hundred and fifty-four MPs, with the required minimum being 226 votes.

These laws have been passed in the middle of a new escalation of attempts to ban the Communist Party of Ukraine and on the eve of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Victory Day, when Nazi Germany capitulated to the Soviet Union.

Iran’s Humanitarian “Rescue” Ship to Yemen

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ashington wants mass Yemeni casualties. It prioritizes overwhelming human suffering as a strategy to defeat resistance to its proxy war of aggression.

Iran is the region’s most prominent peacemaker. It vows not to let Yemen become another Gaza. It intends trying to deliver vital humanitarian aid despite US/Saudi efforts to block it.  On Saturday, a cargo ship named “Rescue” set sail for Yemen. It carries 2,500 tons of medical supplies, food, water, tents and other needed aid.

On board are human rights workers, doctors, other medical professionals, anti-war activists and Iranian journalists. A joint statement from Code Pink Women for Peace, the International Action Center, the United National Anti-War Committee and US Veterans for Peace said:

“The people of Yemen have long been held down by a corrupt undemocratic regime backed by Saudi Arabia and the United States.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham called Saudi aggression genocide. Its actions violate core “international conventions. It uses cluster bombs and other illegal weapons” to increase the number of casualties.

Afkham called on UN officials to act responsibly – to demand aggression on Yemen to end, to let humanitarian aid enter unimpeded.  Seventeen humanitarian aid agencies working in Yemen condemned US-orchestrated/Saudi-led terror bombing and shelling. (But the average American never heard of it, you can bet on that!—Eds)

On Monday, Save the Children’s Yemen director, Edward Santiago said:

“The indiscriminate attacks after the dropping of leaflets urging civilians to leave Saada raises concerns about the possible pattern being established in breach of international humanitarian law.”

“We have seen in the last days that the warnings have not been enough to spare civilian lives. At the same time people are largely unable to flee for safety because of the de facto blockade imposed by the coalition leading to severe fuel shortage.”

Norwegian Refugee Council Yemen director Hanibal Abiy Worku said “(w)e are concerned that the ongoing intensive bombing of Saada Governorate will do little to encourage all parties to the conflict to abide by the preconditions of the ceasefire.”

“(E)ven if a five-day ceasefire goes ahead, the overwhelming scale of humanitarian needs on the ground means that it will make little difference to the lives of millions of increasingly desperate people.”

CARE International called for a longterm durable solution. All 17 aid agencies urged an immediate, permanent ceasefire and end to blockade as the only way to end the suffering of millions of Yemenis.

A 5-day truce resolves nothing. Lack of fuel alone presents a major challenge. Aid agencies said they can’t operate without it. They won’t be able to deliver aid if it arrives.

Riyadh intensified terror-bombing at the same time it announced a 5-day pause. It exposes the hypocrisy of its proposal. The only solution is total unconditional cessation of US-orchestrated aggression, dialogue over confrontation, and universal condemnation of another US imperial war using Saudis as convenient proxies.

How America’s Aristocracy Extends Its Global Control

Eric Zuesse

Some of this man's footprints in the highest spheres of power. He also polluted Harvard, of course.

Summers has left his sordid imprint on the highest spheres of American power. He also polluted Harvard, of course, accidentally reopening the question of what elite US universities do in their “non-academic” time.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s has been well documented even by the BBC, in their 1992 classic documentary about the CIA’s (still-ongoing) Gladio Operation, America’s CIA basically took control of the international racist-fascist (i.e., ideologically nazi) movement after World War II, by protecting and hiring Hitler’s Nazis and their key aristocratic eastern European supporters undercover. The Gladio Operation was just one branch of a broader CIA strategy, developed by Allen Dulles and originally carried out by his protégé James Angleton, to use, for the purposes of America’s aristocracy, nazis’ intense racism, by retargeting it away from Jews and toward Russians, so as to weaken first the Soviet Union, and, then, after the end of that, Russia itself. (U.S. President Barack Obama’s involvement with Ukraine is very much a result of this post-WW-II pro-nazi Dulles-Angleton program.)

There were many other branches of this strategy, one being by the World Bank and IMF to introduce capitalism into the former Soviet states in a manner that would privatize their formerly government-owned assets to aristocrats in the West and in the formerly Soviet nations by means of insider fire-sales which enabled these state-assets to be picked up by cooperating local insiders at non-market super-low prices and thereby have these new “oligarchs” (the local copies there of Western capitalism’s own aristocrats) as being secret agents of the U.S. aristocracy, who would thus be extending the American aristocracy’s control eastward. Mark Ames has succinctly recounted this operation, and David McClintick did the major report on it prior to Ames. That operation was headed by Lawrence Summers, who, at the time, was on leave from Harvard’s economics department to run the World Bank and so to infiltrate into the newly ‘capitalist’ (actually the emerging oligarchic) economies of the east, economics advisors such as Andrei Shleifer and his local Russian operative Anatoly Chubais (though the question as to whether Shleifer was himself connected to the CIA has not been definitively answered), to establish the corruption there in the optimal way, both to subordinate those new aristocrats to America’s own, and also to weaken those countries in order to make them effectively vassal nations to the U.S. aristocracy. The corruption was rampant, and the roles of both the World Bank and the IMF in it were clear: both of those financial institutions operate closely with the CIA.

Regarding whether Professor Summers works with the CIA, that’s unknown. However, the financial disclosure form for Summers as he entered the Obama Administration in 2009, at

http://s3.amazonaws.com/propublica/assets/financial_disclosures/Summers_Lawrence_278.pdf?_ga=1.117788681.1636534319.1424197432

showed that most of his income the prior year was from the international investment firm of D.E. Shaw & Co., in the form of a salary of $1,248,747, another salary of $183,750, a distributive share of partnership of $2,596,171, and another distributive share of partnership of $1,159,955, totaling $5,188,623. Summers had joined that company in 2006. Wikipedia’s article on D.E. Shaw & Co. says that, “After the Russian debt default in 1998, the company suffered losses in its fixed-income trading.” One might reasonably suppose that the multi-million-dollar value which Summers held for that investment firm was related to his insider knowledge from having overseen the privatizations of formerly communist countries. If Summers had not also been serving as a CIA asset while at the World Bank and Harvard, then one might wonder why not, especially considering the harm that Summers did to Russia (the CIA’s target to weaken), and also considering the CIA’s institutional hatred of Russia — a hatred so well served by Summers. If Summers was not an off-the-books CIA asset in that operation, then the question would be: Why didn’t they pay him? He was a powerful weapon in the war that they wage for the global dominance of America’s aristocracy.

The ruthless mafioso Boris Berezovski, naturally a Washington associate in plundering Russia.

The ruthless Boris Berezovsky,  was a complex and gifted man who became a reliable Washington associate in plundering Russia. Some Western media have painted him as an avatar of democracy resisting “Putin’s tyranny”, but Berezovsky had been at one time a powerful supporter of Putin’s ascendancy in the post-Yeltsin period.  His pro-US stance caused a rift between the two that only grew as time passed.

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]urthermore, on 14 April 2015, Graham Stak in Business New Europe’s bneintellinews bannered “The Rise and Fall of the Russian Oligarchy,” and he revealed that, “Newly declassified documents from President Bill Clinton’s administration, released to bneIntelliNews, show how Putin’s candidacy [to lead Russia] was a compromise after a fierce battle for power in Russia between pro-US oligarchs [headed by Boris Berezovsky] and pro-state conservatives [headed by the former KGB chief Evgenny Primakov]. At stake was not just power in Russia, but the crucial question of Russia’s relationship with the West.

Berezovsky’s seven bankers [Berezovsky himself, Vladimir Gusinsky, Mikhail Fridman, Vladimir Vinogradov, Aleksandr Smolensky, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Vladimir Potanin]” owned not just the banks but also the major Russian TV networks and especially Berezovsky’s own ORT-TV ‘news’ operation, which was Russia’s biggest. Berezovsky also “was involved in corrupt schemes such as siphoning funds from state-owned national carrier Aeroflot, as well as benefiting from crony privatizations,” and that’s precisely the type of person whom America’s aristocracy wanted to be controlling Russia, as their agent. Russia’s leader Boris Yeltsin was torn between the two sides, and he appointed to be his successor a lower-level former KGB operative, Vladimir Putin, in a surprise move that Yeltsin intended to satisfy both sides, both the independent-Russia side that Primakov favored, and the ‘pro-West’ (actually pro-vassal-state-of-America’s-aristocracy) side that were the client-beneficiaries of the Harvard Economics Department team, who were appointed by Bill Clinton, who was aiming to take over Russia for America’s aristocrats.

Bill Clinton: A phony and a war criminal, like all US presidents—at least those in recent memory. All candidates are carefully vetted for their venality. (DonkeyHotey, via flickr)

The scoundrel Bill Clinton: A slick phony and a war criminal, like all US presidents in recent memory. He was instrumental in extending NATO and US power to the very heart of Russia, and betraying the working class big time at home and abroad . He also unleashed the banksters on an unprotected public by lifting the remaining Glass-Steagall injunctions. The cartoon makes him look funny—and therefore harmless—but there’s nothing really funny about what this crook did to America and the world.  (DonkeyHotey, via flickr)

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]nother side of Bill Clinton’s operation for the U.S. aristocracy was the expansion of NATO eastward to Russia’s borders, so as to terrorize Russia into vassalage to ‘democracy’ and ‘the West’ and ‘Europe’; i.e., to America’s aristocracy (which is actually fascist, as are all aristocracies), not to any authentic democracy at all. On 19 April 2015 I headlined “NATO Increasingly Surrounds the ‘Russian Threat’,” and described how Bill Clinton started the process of extending NATO after NATO’s alleged opponent, the Soviet Union’s Warsaw Pact, had dissolved and ended in 1991. The alleged reason for NATO’s existence turned out not to be its actual reason for existence (since that reason, communism, was gone), which turns out to have been to serve as the marketing arm for U.S. armaments-producers, which constitute 56% of all global arms-sales. UK is only 11%. Russia is only 8%. France is only 6%. All others are below 2%. NATO is the American aristocracy’s arms-merchandising organization. It whips up fear and hatred of Russia, in order not only to weaken Russia, but also to boost U.S. aristocrats’ control over other aristocracies (whose governments purchase those weapons). NATO’s authentic function continues on, even though communism is gone and no longer a threat [technically never was, as communism is far preferable to capitalism—Eds], either to the United States, or to any other nation. The taxpayers, and the war-ravaged publics, are the people who pay the prices for this; America’s aristocracy get all the benefits from it.

Bill Clinton not only followed through on his predecessor, George H.W. Bush’s, con of Russia’s hopeful and well-intentioned leader Mikhail Gorbachev, by expanding — as did his successors GWB and Obama — NATO instead of abolishing it (which he should have done), but he also terminated the Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Glass-Steagall Act, which after the 1929 crash (and until Clinton ended it in 1999) blocked the megabanks from gambling with depositors’ money in ways that would leave future U.S. taxpayers in hock to pay the losses whenever those megabank gambles lose money (such as in 2008); and, so, Clinton introduced a “heads I win, tails you lose” relationship between the aristocrats and the U.S. public. He exacerbated that by blocking Brooksley Born’s proposed regulation of derivatives-trading. These two Clinton actions created the (unregulated) Wall Street actual but unprosecuted crime-wave that produced the post-2008 explosion of the U.S. federal debt from the still ongoing “QE” bail-outs of the mega-banks’ counterparties (the aristocrats). Clinton was the ultimate anti-Democrat, if “Democrat” is understood in the sense of FDR’s tradition, the pre-Reagan dominant tradition. He was the Reagan ‘Democrat,’ and the ultimate model for Obama’s Presidency: the anti-FDR ‘Democrat.’

Clinton also introduced the international race-to-the-bottom in wages and in consumer and environmental protections, via the American aristocracy’s trade deals, NAFTA, etc., which are now being greatly intensified by Obama in his proposed secretly negotiated (and perhaps soon to be blindly approved by the aristocracy’s Congress) TPP, TTIP, and TISA. In Obama’s proposed versions, panels of international corporations will override the laws of individual nations regarding the environment, consumer protections, product safety, investor protections, workplace safety, wages, etc., so that voters will no longer have any significant say over these types of matters, but only the controlling stockholders in those international corporations will. Obama has had virtual 100% support of Republicans in Congress for these trade deals, but the Democratic leader Harry Reid essentially blocked the deals while he headed the Senate; and, now, his successor, Charles Schumer, has switched from pro to anti on them, because victory for Obama’s trade-deals would mean, essentially, victory in the whole ballgame for the Republican Party. While the U.S. aristocracy has owned the Republican Party ever since Abraham Lincoln was shot in 1865, that aristocracy has now come to own also the very top, the national, level of the Democratic Party. But there still remains enough of a progressive power-base at work in local Democratic Party primary elections to provide significant blowback against any merely local Democratic politician who becomes so blatantly a sell-out to the aristocracy as Obama is as the nation’s President. Schumer, in other words, has decided not to end the Democratic Party — or, at least, not yet, to end it (as Clinton did end it, at the national level — DLC, etc.).

What used to be the Republican Party (in the sense, for example, that John Loftus and Mark Aarons understood the contest between the two Parties to be in their 1994, pre-Clinton-era, Secret War Against the Jews, which portrays the fascist — even to the point of nazism, or racist fascism — U.S. aristocracy, as operating almost entirely via the Republicans’ Dulles brothers and their agent James Angleton) has now become instead the actual one-party-state U.S., in which both political Parties are doing the bidding of America’s aristocracy, not only against America’s public, but also against all other aristocracies, to control the entire world.

The results have been a globally increasing inequality of wealth, a rampant global corruption, and a succession of local wars in which the U.S. aristocracy, and its energy-partners the Saudis and other Sunni oil aristocrats, finance and sponsor actions to support their global plan, which U.S. President Barack Obama stated to West Point’s graduating cadets on 28 May 2014, and which is really more anti-Russian than anti-‘terrorism,’ because the U.S.’s Arabic-aristocratic partners are the actual financiers of Islamic jihad, which is the ideology of Wahhabism, the Sauds’ true ideological commitment (which America’s aristocracy hopes to restrain but places as lower priority than is the defeat of Russia); so, here is what Obama told those cadets, about their career-obligation now, as future U.S. military officers:

“The United States is and remains the one indispensable nation. That has been true for the century passed [his intended word here was actually ‘past’] and it will be true for the century to come. [He’s telling future officers that all other  nations are ‘dispensable’.]

“But the world is changing with accelerating speed. This presents opportunity, but also new dangers. We know all too well, after 9/11, just how technology and globalization has [his intended word here was actually ‘have’] put power once reserved for states in the hands of individuals, raising the capacity of terrorists to do harm. Russia’s aggression toward former Soviet states unnerves capitals in Europe, while China’s economic rise and military reach worries its neighbors. From Brazil to India, rising middle classes compete with us, and governments seek a greater say in global forums. And even as developing nations embrace democracy and market economies, 24-hour news and social media makes [his intended word here was ‘make’] it impossible to ignore the continuation of sectarian conflicts and failing states and popular uprisings that might have received only passing notice a generation ago.

“It will be your generation’s task to respond to this new world.”

Thus, the assignment, of the U.S. military, as set forth there, is economic in nature. But it’s carried out by military means. Despite the liberal rhetoric, which as usual is lying to say that military force is the ‘last resort,’ it’s the last resort only in the same sense that to a lender, the enforcer of a debt is the ‘last resort’: the lender’s side of a loan is nothing without the real threat of coercion; and, similarly, the American aristocracy’s continued dominance of the world would end without the U.S. military to back it up. Obama was telling the U.S. military that, when Russia, China, the other BRICS countries, and Russia’s Shiite allies Iran and Syria, say no to America’s aristocracy, the U.S. military’s assignment will be to go after those resistors, to kill them with bombs and everything else, in order to force them to comply with the demands of America’s aristocracy.

“Most [rank-and-file Democrats] just don’t care enough to find out, nor even to think things through. They virtually invite being deceived. They’d rather stay in their idealogical fantasyland…”

However, deception is the aristocrat’s first preference, it being a cheaper alternative as compared to the use of bullets and body-bags. (Similarly: lenders prefer not to need to pay enforcers; in this sense, the military really is “the last resort,” just as any carrying-through with a threat will inevitably be.) Thus, for example, on Saturday April 18th, the Sydney Morning Herald, in Australia, headlined “Barack Obama plays China card in TPP sales pitch,” and reported that, “Fast-track [approval] for Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade deal has Republican support but many Democrats doubt its purported benefits. US President Barack Obama warns of China’s intentions to fill any gap left open if Trans-Pacific Partnership fails.” America’s President is now trying to use an anti-China scare tactic, to drum up support for keeping the public out of the determination as regards whether national governments should become replaced by an international aristocratic dictatorship, on many important types of matters (via Obama’s trade-deals). His implicit message (and hoax) is that the public’s enemy isn’t their own nation’s aristocracy; it’s instead an entire alien people, specifically the Chinese. “‘If we do not help to shape the rules so that our businesses and our workers can compete in those markets, then China will set up rules that advantage Chinese workers and Chinese businesses,’ he said.” Part of his implicit message is that low-wage countries should remain low-wage countries. He carried that idea through at the start of his Administration, in Honduras — a land of grinding poverty, where he perhaps helped to overthrow a progressive democratic President and then he definitely locked-in a fascist regime, which the rest of the hemisphere outright opposed. As a consequence of Obama’s action (which was spearheaded by Hillary Clinton), Honduras went backward instead of forward.

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]n the China matter, just as in the Russia matter, and just as in the international trade-deal matter, Barack Obama can rely upon congressional Republicans to vote for what he wants, but most congressional Democrats will vote against it, because he’s really a closeted Republican, who talks a liberal line but follows through with it on only ethnic and gender issues, which for lots of the Democratic Party’s electorate, are the only issues that they really care about. The aristocracy care little-to-nothing about those matters; it’s safe for Obama to pretend about matters like those — and, for example, Blacks still support him, even though they’re suffering the most economic harm of any group under his Presidency. The culture of Blacks, just like that of Jews and other minorities, has trained them to think racially, above all; and this is what the aristocracy needs, so that the broad majority middle class will blame the minorities and the poor, those even weaker than themselves, instead of blaming the fraction of 1% who actually hold the real power and so shape the views that are held by everybody else — including by those middle and lower classes. Hostility, for perceived injustices, then pours forth upon “Jews,” “Blacks,” etc., instead of upon that fraction of 1% who actually control things (see the summary here). (And, furthermore: it’s also worth keeping in mind, in this context, the broader reality, beyond that of merely one’s own nation, that the “World’s Richest 0.7% Own 13.67 Times as Much as World’s Poorest 68.7%.” In other words: inequality is so enormous that, worldwide, the richest 0.7% “own 41% of the planet’s private assets. The world’s richest 8.4% own 83.3%. The world’s richest 31.3% own 97%. So: the bottom 68.7% own just 3% — and the richest 0.7% own 13.7 times as much as that. Furthermore, the gini, or measure of inequality, is higher — more unequal — in the U.S. than in all but five other nations on this entire planet.)

The aristocracy enjoys playing the public for suckers (like Obama’s touted “China” threat), because the public’s very real and incontrovertible suckerdom then reinforces, in aristocrats’ minds (and in their agents, such as Obama and Summers) the contempt they hold regarding the public.

Regarding the TTIP with Europe, the first and only independently produced economic analysis of that deal, published October 2014, finds that it would harm the public and benefit only owners of large international corporations; and that’s the very same finding which has been similarly published regarding the TPP with Asia, on 16 April 2015.

obama-islamic-stateBarack Obama’s ultimate reward for his ample services to America’s aristocracy will probably be basically like Bill Clinton’s: leaving an enormous financial-and-power inheritance for his heirs, his daughters and their husbands and children. Abolition of inheritance-taxes (and of the affiliated gift-taxes) is a core issue for any aristocracy; and, though President Obama has never openly supported the Republicans on it, he has approved the continued lowering of those taxes upon unearned wealth, while the federal debt has been soaring (against future generations’ earned  wealth) to pay for the bailouts and wars that have been floating America’s aristocrats on an ever-rising cloud of increasingly concentrated wealth (in largely unearned  hands, which is what any aristocracy inevitably favors above all earned  wealth).

This is called by them ‘the opportunity society.’ (Read all about it there, from Obama, and also from self-acknowledged  Republicans. But, of course, Obama is playing the ‘good cop,’ to their “bad.” Larry Summers does the same. Their propaganda-line sounds as if it comes from central headquarters.) As if equality of opportunity can actually rise while inequality of wealth is rising. It can’t really happen. The PR line is only for fools. The aristocracy enjoys playing the public for suckers, like that (and like Obama’s touted “China” threat), because the public’s very real and incontrovertible suckerdom then reinforces, in aristocrats’ minds (and in their agents, such as Obama and Summers) the contempt they hold regarding the public. Which, in turn, causes aristocrats — many of whom are actually stupid themselves — to think that somehow they deserve what they have inherited, and that their heirs will, too. No wonder, then, how it came to be that so many of them aren’t merely fascists, but are outright nazis — racist fascists. It all makes sense. They believe in the moral rightness of what is inherited. Even though that belief is blatantly stupid — even ridiculous. It’s widespread among aristocrats.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]here is no mystery about why things have come to this point. It’s the way things are and have always been. It’s ‘God’s way.’ It’s ‘nature’s way.’ It’s psychopathy’s way. But is it good? Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Lawrence Summers, and Republicans, clearly think so (regardless of what especially ‘Democrats’ among them might say). But Franklin Delano Roosevelt, an authentic democrat (and not merely a nominal one who adopted the ‘Democratic’ label in order the more effectively to serve his aristocratic masters), thought not. (After all, as FDR relentlessly pointed out: it’s basically “Might makes right.”) The ideological sea-change in America (to “Greed is good; the wealthiest are the best”) occurred when Ronald Reagan came into office. We are still fundamentally in the Reagan era. Ever since he was elected, the Barry Goldwater of 1964 has, in effect, been ideologically America’s President, but national ‘Democrats’ have been trying to find liberal terms for his “Conscience of a Conservative.” They do this to pretend that it’s somehow “liberal.” And that that “liberalism” is somehow ‘progressive.’ But it’s not. It’s the opposite of progressive; it is regressive. In other words: it is conservative. It goes backward. That entire political system is based on lies (not just on errors, but on outright frauds), though most of its believers aren’t aware of the fact. (Most of them just don’t care enough to find out, nor even to think things through. They virtually invite being deceived. They’d rather stay in their idealogical fantasyland. I deal with the actual history of this entire matter, of political and economic ideology, in my latest book.)

So: those are the forces that have produced the politics and government that exists, regardless of the politics and government that would be the best, or even good, or even just okay, for most people. Injustice and oppression are natural, even though they are also evil. And: just because something is natural doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s inevitable. Only the most extreme conservatives believe that “Might makes right.” The fact is: Might makes likely. And, real progress is always unlikely. But it does happen, especially in the best of countries. America’s great Founders defeated the aristocracy of their time. [Moe precisely, only Britain’s aristocracy, setting down the foundations for a new aristocracy at home.—Eds]  Gradually, an American aristocracy has arisen to take its place. But, with what’s now known, perhaps those people can also be defeated; and, this time, because of what is now known, it might be able to be done in a way that will prevent any future aristocracy from forming here. The situation is far from hopeless. It is bad, but progress really is possible. And progress should be the goal.

The Kremlin and the Neocons

Promoting Chaos Across the Middle East

Paul Wolfowitz: Because he and his accomplices exist, millions may have died, and humanity is rapidly sliding toward a nuclear confrontation. One of fate’s cruel twists. The perfidious, warmongering Neocons must be seen for what they are: a lethal and criminal pestilence on the face of the earth. But who’s listening? [dropcap]F[/dropcap]ormer Washington insider and four-star General Wesley Clark spilled the beans several years ago on how Paul Wolfowitz and his neoconservative co-conspirators implemented their sweeping plan to destabilize key Middle Eastern countries once it became clear that post-Soviet Russia “won’t stop us.”

As I recently reviewed a YouTube eight-minute clip of General Clark’s October 2007 speech, what leaped out at me was that the neocons had been enabled by their assessment that – after the collapse of the Soviet Union – Russia had become neutralized and posed no deterrent to U.S. military action in the Middle East.

While Clark’s public exposé largely escaped attention in the neocon-friendly “mainstream media” (surprise, surprise!), he recounted being told by a senior general at the Pentagon shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 about the Donald Rumsfeld/Paul Wolfowitz-led plan for “regime change” in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran.

Clark

Clark

This was startling enough, I grant you, since officially the United States presents itself as a nation that respects international law, frowns upon other powerful nations overthrowing the governments of weaker states, and – in the aftermath of World War II – condemned past aggressions by Nazi Germany and decried Soviet “subversion” of pro-U.S. nations.

But what caught my eye this time was the significance of Clark’s depiction of Wolfowitz in 1992 gloating over what he judged to be a major lesson learned from the Desert Storm attack on Iraq in 1991; namely, “the Soviets won’t stop us.”

That remark directly addresses a question that has troubled me since March 2003 when George W. Bush attacked Iraq. Would the neocons – widely known as “the crazies” at least among the remaining sane people of Washington – have been crazy enough to opt for war to re-arrange the Middle East if the Soviet Union had not fallen apart in 1991?

The question is not an idle one. Despite the debacle in Iraq and elsewhere, the neocon “crazies” still exercise huge influence in Establishment Washington. Thus, the question now becomes whether, with Russia far more stable and much stronger, the “crazies” are prepared to risk military escalation with Russia over Ukraine, what retired U.S. diplomat William R. Polk deemed a potentially dangerous nuclear confrontation, a “Cuban Missile Crisis in reverse.”

Putin’s Comment

The geopolitical vacuum that enabled the neocons to try out their “regime change” scheme in the Middle East may have been what Russian President Vladimir Putin was referring to in his state-of-the-nation address on April 25, 2005, when he called the collapse of the Soviet Union “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the [past] century.” Putin’s comment has been a favorite meme of those who seek to demonize Putin by portraying him as lusting to re-establish a powerful USSR through aggression in Europe.

But, commenting two years after the Iraq invasion, Putin seemed correct at least in how the neocons exploited the absence of the Russian counterweight to over-extend American power in ways that were harmful to the world, devastating to the people at the receiving end of the neocon interventions, and even detrimental to the United States.

If one takes a step back and attempts an unbiased look at the spread of violence in the Middle East over the past quarter-century, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Putin’s comment was on the mark. With Russia a much-weakened military power in the 1990s and early 2000s, there was nothing to deter U.S. policymakers from the kind of adventurism at Russia’s soft underbelly that, in earlier years, would have carried considerable risk of armed U.S.-USSR confrontation.

I lived in the USSR during the 1970s and would not wish that kind of restrictive regime on anyone. Until it fell apart, though, it was militarily strong enough to deter Wolfowitz-style adventurism. And I will say that – for the millions of people now dead, injured or displaced by U.S. military action in the Middle East over the past dozen years – the collapse of the Soviet Union as a deterrent to U.S. war-making was not only a “geopolitical catastrophe” but an unmitigated disaster.

Visiting Wolfowitz

In his 2007 speech, General Clark related how in early 1991 he dropped in on Paul Wolfowitz, then Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (and later, from 2001 to 2005, Deputy Secretary of Defense). It was just after a major Shia uprising in Iraq in March 1991. President George H.W. Bush’s administration had provoked it, but then did nothing to rescue the Shia from brutal retaliation by Saddam Hussein, who had just survived his Persian Gulf defeat.

According to Clark, Wolfowitz said: “We should have gotten rid of Saddam Hussein. The truth is, one thing we did learn is that we can use our military in the Middle East and the Soviets won’t stop us. We’ve got about five or 10 years to clean up those old Soviet client regimes – Syria, Iran (sic), Iraq – before the next great superpower comes on to challenge us.”

It’s now been more than 10 years, of course. But do not be deceived into thinking Wolfowitz and his neocon colleagues believe they have failed in any major way. The unrest they initiated keeps mounting – in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Lebanon – not to mention fresh violence now in full swing in Yemen and the crisis in Ukraine. Yet, the Teflon coating painted on the neocons continues to cover and protect them in the “mainstream media.”

True, one neocon disappointment is Iran. It is more stable and less isolated than before; it is playing a sophisticated role in Iraq; and it is on the verge of concluding a major nuclear agreement with the West – barring the throwing of a neocon/Israeli monkey wrench into the works to thwart it, as has been done in the past.

An earlier setback for the neocons came at the end of August 2013 when President Barack Obama decided not to let himself be mouse-trapped by the neocons into ordering U.S. forces to attack Syria. Wolfowitz et al. were on the threshold of having the U.S. formally join the war against Bashar al-Assad’s government of Syria when there was the proverbial slip between cup and lip. With the aid of the neocons’ new devil-incarnate Vladimir Putin, Obama faced them down and avoided war.

A week after it became clear that the neocons were not going to get their war in Syria, I found myself at the main CNN studio in Washington together with Paul Wolfowitz and former Sen. Joe Lieberman, another important neocon. As I reported in “How War on Syria Lost Its Way,” the scene was surreal – funereal, even, with both Wolfowitz and Lieberman very much down-in-the-mouth, behaving as though they had just watched their favorite team lose the Super Bowl.

Israeli/Neocon Preferences

But the neocons are nothing if not resilient. Despite their grotesque disasters, like the Iraq War, and their disappointments, like not getting their war on Syria, they neither learn lessons nor change goals. They just readjust their aim, shooting now at Putin over Ukraine as a way to clear the path again for “regime change” in Syria and Iran. [See Consortiumnews.com’s “Why Neocons Seek to Destabilize Russia.”]

The neocons also can take some solace from their “success” at enflaming the Middle East with Shia and Sunni now at each other’s throats — a bad thing for many people of the world and certainly for the many innocent victims in the region, but not so bad for the neocons. After all, it is the view of Israeli leaders and their neocon bedfellows (and women) that the internecine wars among Muslims provide at least some short-term advantages for Israel as it consolidates control over the Palestinian West Bank.

In a Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity memorandum for President Obama on Sept. 6, 2013, we called attention to an uncommonly candid report about Israeli/neocon motivation, written by none other than the Israel-friendly New York Times Bureau Chief in Jerusalem Jodi Rudoren on Sept. 2, 2013, just two days after Obama took advantage of Putin’s success in persuading the Syrians to allow their chemical weapons to be destroyed and called off the planned attack on Syria, causing consternation among neocons in Washington.

Rudoren can perhaps be excused for her naïve lack of “political correctness.” She had been barely a year on the job, had very little prior experience with reporting on the Middle East, and – in the excitement about the almost-attack on Syria – she apparently forgot the strictures normally imposed on the Times’ reporting from Jerusalem. In any case, Israel’s priorities became crystal clear in what Rudoren wrote.

In her article, entitled “Israel Backs Limited Strike Against Syria,” Rudoren noted that the Israelis were arguing, quietly, that the best outcome for Syria’s (then) 2 ½-year-old civil war, at least for the moment, was no outcome:

“For Jerusalem, the status quo, horrific as it may be from a humanitarian perspective, seems preferable to either a victory by Mr. Assad’s government and his Iranian backers or a strengthening of rebel groups, increasingly dominated by Sunni jihadis.

“‘This is a playoff situation in which you need both teams to lose, but at least you don’t want one to win — we’ll settle for a tie,’ said Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli consul general in New York. ‘Let them both bleed, hemorrhage to death: that’s the strategic thinking here. As long as this lingers, there’s no real threat from Syria.’”

Clear enough? If this is the way Israel’s leaders continue to regard the situation in Syria, then they look on deeper U.S. involvement – overt or covert – as likely to ensure that there is no early resolution of the conflict there. The longer Sunni and Shia are killing each other, not only in Syria but also across the region as a whole, the safer Tel Aviv’s leaders calculate Israel is.

Favoring Jihadis

But Israeli leaders have also made clear that if one side must win, they would prefer the Sunni side, despite its bloody extremists from Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. In September 2013, shortly after Rudoren’s article, Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren, then a close adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told the Jerusalem Post that Israel favored the Sunni extremists over Assad.

“The greatest danger to Israel is by the strategic arc that extends from Tehran, to Damascus to Beirut. And we saw the Assad regime as the keystone in that arc,” Oren said in an interview. “We always wanted Bashar Assad to go, we always preferred the bad guys who weren’t backed by Iran to the bad guys who were backed by Iran.” He said this was the case even if the “bad guys” were affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

In June 2014, Oren – then speaking as a former ambassador – said Israel would even prefer a victory by the Islamic State, which was massacring captured Iraqi soldiers and beheading Westerners, than the continuation of the Iranian-backed Assad in Syria. “From Israel’s perspective, if there’s got to be an evil that’s got to prevail, let the Sunni evil prevail,” Oren said.

Netanyahu sounded a similar theme in his March 3, 2015 speech to the U.S. Congress in which he trivialized the threat from the Islamic State with its “butcher knives, captured weapons and YouTube” when compared to Iran, which he accused of “gobbling up the nations” of the Middle East.

That Syria’s main ally is Iran with which it has a mutual defense treaty plays a role in Israeli calculations. Accordingly, while some Western leaders would like to achieve a realistic if imperfect settlement of the Syrian civil war, others who enjoy considerable influence in Washington would just as soon see the Assad government and the entire region bleed out.

As cynical and cruel as this strategy is, it isn’t all that hard to understand. Yet, it seems to be one of those complicated, politically charged situations well above the pay-grade of the sophomores advising President Obama – who, sad to say, are no match for the neocons in the Washington Establishment. Not to mention the Netanyahu-mesmerized Congress.

Corker Uncorked

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]peaking of Congress, a year after Rudoren’s report, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tennessee, who now chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, divulged some details about the military attack that had been planned against Syria, while lamenting that it was canceled.

In doing so, Corker called Obama’s abrupt change on Aug. 31, 2013, in opting for negotiations over open war on Syria, “the worst moment in U.S. foreign policy since I’ve been here.” Following the neocon script, Corker blasted the deal (since fully implemented) with Putin and the Syrians to rid Syria of its chemical weapons.

Corker complained, “In essence – I’m sorry to be slightly rhetorical – we jumped into Putin’s lap.” A big No-No, of course – especially in Congress – to “jump into Putin’s lap” even though Obama was able to achieve the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons without the United States jumping into another Middle East war.

It would have been nice, of course, if General Clark had thought to share his inside-Pentagon information earlier with the rest of us. In no way should he be seen as a whistleblower.

At the time of his September 2007 speech, he was deep into his quixotic attempt to win the Democratic nomination for president in 2008. In other words, Clark broke the omerta code of silence observed by virtually all U.S. generals, even post-retirement, merely to put some distance between himself and the debacle in Iraq – and win some favor among anti-war Democrats. It didn’t work, so he endorsed Hillary Clinton; that didn’t work, so he endorsed Barack Obama.

Wolfowitz, typically, has landed on his feet. He is now presidential hopeful Jeb Bush’s foreign policy/defense adviser, no doubt outlining his preferred approach to the Middle East chessboard to his new boss. Does anyone know the plural of “bedlam?”

There Goes the Guardian, Lying About Ukraine…Again!

We Stand on Firm Ground

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he western media is busily trying to prop up their failed narrative of “Russian aggression” in Ukraine in a desperate attempt to legitimize their consciously deceitful reporting. To do so, they are now relying not on experts or western intelligence reports, but a discredited blogger and his corporate media chums.

On February 17, 2015, The Guardian ran a story with the headline “Russia shelled Ukrainians from within its own territory, says study.”The title alone is enough to convince many casual observers that yes, the mainstream media reporting on the civil war in Ukraine has been correct all along. You see, it’s all because of Russian aggression, or so the meme would go. But closer analysis of this story, and the key players involved, should cause any reasonably intelligent and logical person to seriously doubt the veracity of nearly every aspect of the story.

Let’s begin first with the headline and subhead which, as anyone in media knows, is often all that will be read by many readers. The headline leads with a conclusion: Russia shelled Ukraine from within Russian territory. Simple. Clear. Why bother reading further? Well, in reality, the article both overtly and tacitly admits that the so called “study” (more on that later) has not reached that clear conclusion, not even close. Here are some key phrases sprinkled throughout the piece that should give pause to any serious-minded political observer or analyst.

Despite the declaration in the headline, a close reader encounters phrases such as “near conclusive proof,” “estimated trajectories,” “likely firing positions,” and other ambiguous phrases that are more suggestive than they are declarative. In other words, these are mere rhetorical flourishes designed to lead casual, uninformed readers to make conclusions that are simply not backed up by the evidence.

The so called study relied heavily on “crater patterns from satellite photos of three battlefields,” and it is from these crater patterns, and the equally dubious “tyre tracks” that the authors of the study drew their conclusions. However, even the independent military forensics expert contacted by The Guardian “warned that the accuracy of crater analysis in determining direction of fire on the basis of satellite photography was scientifically unproven.”

Indeed, conveniently buried at the end of the long article is the key quote from Stephen Johnson, a weapons expert at the Cranfield Forensic Institute, part of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom who said quite clearly that crater analysis is “highly experimental and prone to inaccuracy.” Mr. Johnson added that “This does not mean there is no value to the method, but that any results must be considered with caution and require corroboration.”

Wait a second. I thought that our dear expert authors of the study had “near conclusive proof” according to the lead paragraphs of the story. When you actually read what the real expert, as opposed to the non-experts who conducted the “study,” has to say, it immediately casts a long shadow of doubt on the entire narrative being propagated by the article. Is The Guardian here guilty of clear manipulation of the story for political purposes? It would seem at best unprofessional and dishonest reporting, at worst it’s outright lying in the service of the agenda of those at the top of the western political establishment.

Now of course we know that The Guardian has repeatedly been taken to task by highly respected journalists and analysts for its biased and one-sided reporting of issues ranging from its coverage of Russian President Putin and Russia’s actions in Crimea, to its shamefully biased (herehere and here for three of the many examples) coverage of Israel-Palestine conflict, and a number of other important issues.

Perhaps most germane to this discussion is The Guardian’s own reporting last summer, which it references in this article, of Russian military vehicles crossing the border into Ukraine – a significant charge that would be taken seriously if there were one shred of tangible proof. But alas there isn’t. There is only the word of The Guardian’s reporter Shaun Walker, who conveniently could not get a photograph or video of the alleged military vehicles crossing into Ukraine. One would think with mobile phones all equipped with cameras and the vast resources of a major western media outlet, not to mention the seemingly all-encompassing global surveillance architecture at the disposal of western governments, at least some credible, verifiable evidence would have emerged. But no, we just have to take the Guardian’s word for it.

There’s a lot of that going around when it comes to Ukraine. We just have to “take their word for it,” as we were supposed to with regard to the charges of Russian military shooting down MH17, a baseless charge that has since disappeared from the headlines, with the actual results of the investigation being buried or suppressed entirely.

Not only should The Guardian’s reporting be scrutinized, but so too should their darling “expert” blogger Eliot Higgins, aka Brown Moses, the author of this inconclusive “conclusive report.”

Fifty Shades of Brown

Aside from the deceptive language and misleading statements, there is a broader issue that must be addressed, namely the reliability of the source of this so called study. Perhaps first we should dispense with the use of the term “study” as that would imply experts using objective facts, data, etc. Rather, what we are dealing with is a politically motivated report by a source that has already been discredited numerous times.

The report comes from an organization called Bellingcat, purportedly an independent citizen journalism platform that uses social media and other open source information to draw conclusions about everything from military hardware movements to the firing of missiles and artillery. Of course it should immediately raise questions that The Guardian’s article is co-authored by one Eliot Higgins, a self-proclaimed “military expert” who founded the “Brown Moses” blog. Why is this important? Because Bellingcat is a creation of the same Eliot Higgins. Indeed, Bellingcat’s Kickstarter page made no secret of the fact that “Bellingcat is a website founded by Brown Moses…the pseudonym for Eliot Higgins, a laid-off government worker turned blogger turned weapons analysis expert and leading source of information on the conflict in Syria.”

A close look at some of the blurbs noted on the Kickstarter page reveals that this “independent blogger” has been touted by The Guardian, Deutsche Welle, UK’s Channel 4, The Daily Beast, and many other corporate media outlets. Anyone with an understanding of how hard it is to actually be an independent analyst knows that such establishment outlets do not simply promote independent media that provides thoughtful analysis. Rather, Brown Moses and Bellingcat have been seized upon as a convenient foil to true alternative media, spinning the establishment narrative under the guise of “independent reporting.” However, let us not simply deride this obvious sham. Let us evaluate Brown Moses’ own record, which for an “expert” is dismal.

Higgins aka Brown Moses aka BM claimed to have proven that the chemical weapons attack on Ghouta, Syria on August 21, 2013 could only have been carried out by the Syrian military and government. His claims are based on his own “expert” analysis of missile trajectories and other “evidence” he claims to have obtained through videos and other open source information. Of course, in making this claim, Higgins places himself in direct opposition to former UN weapons inspector Richard Lloyd and Prof. Theodore Postel of MIT, the authors of an actual reportfrom the MIT Science, Technology, and Global Security Working Group entitled “Possible Implications of Faulty US Technical Intelligence in the Damascus Nerve Agent Attack of August 21, 2013.” The report, conducted by real experts, not armchair bloggers, concluded that the Syrian government could not have carried out the attack, and that such intelligence was nearly used as justification for yet another aggressive war.

Also debunking BM’s spurious charges is the report from Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh which revealed the existence of a classified US Defense Intelligence Agency briefing which noted unequivocally that the Al Nusra Front had its own chemical weapons, not to mention deep ties to Saudi and Turkish intelligence and chemical arms suppliers. Hersh’s reporting finally firmly established the fact that the rebels were indeed capable of carrying out the attack on East Ghouta, and that they had help from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and possibly other regional actors. And so, not only did they have the motive (to blame Assad for using chemical weapons while international investigators were in Syria, thereby justifying a military intervention and regime change), but also the means and opportunity. This is an essential point because the entire ‘case’ against Assad relied on the fact that only Damascus was technologically and logistically capable of carrying out such an attack.

But BM contended that he was right, Hersh, Lloyd, and Postel were wrong, and that the narrative should reflect that. So, on the one hand we have a blogger with no formal training in ballistics, physics, or any relevant scientific or military field, and on the other we have a Pulitzer Prize winner with decades of experience and high-level contacts and sources all over the world. We have the word of some guy in an apartment in the UK, or the scientifically arrived at findings of a former chemical weapons inspector (read actual expert) and an internationally respected Professor of Science, Technology, and National Security Policy at MIT, a world renowned academic and research institution. And which do you think The Guardian chose to promote?

But BM’s noxious odor also pervades the reporting on the downing of MH 17, yet another story that The Guardian utterly distorted, before mostly dropping it from the headlines when the western narrative was discredited. In an August 2, 2014 article written by Higgins entitled “MH17 Missiles Can’t Hide From These Internet Sleuths,” Higgins claims to have concluded that Russia or the anti-Kiev rebels must have shot down the plane with a Buk missile launcher – a weapons system also in the possession of Kiev’s military. What is his evidence? It’s a series of photographs published in various media outlets that he cannot corroborate in any way. Instead, this “sleuth” is making his case based on faith – faith that the photographs were taken where and when they claim to have been, and show what they claim to show.

Of course, it has since been publicly acknowledged on more than one occasion that photographs purporting to show Russian military incursions into Ukraine have been fabricated and/or misrepresentedcausing tremendous embarrassment for US and European governments that have repeatedly claimed to have such evidence. But our dear BM is unfazed by such revelations. Instead, he seems to simply shriek louder. Rather than leaving analysis of MH 17 to aviation and military experts, he peddles his “opinion.” Rather than acknowledging the bias in his own reporting, to say nothing of the limitations of armchair technical analysis, he continues to grow his image, and with it, the lies, omissions, and distortions he propagates.

And so we return to the new “study” by Higgins and his Bellingcat group of “digital detectives.” They are obviously front-and-center in the western media because their conclusions are aligned with the US-NATO political agenda. They are a de facto arm of the western corporate media and military-industrial complex, providing the veneer of “independent analysis” in order to penetrate the blogosphere and social media platforms where the mainstream narrative is being questioned, scrutinized, and discredited. Bellingcat and Higgins’ names should be known to everyone, but not because their analysis is worthwhile. Rather, they need to become household names so that those who understand how western propaganda and soft power actually works, will be on the lookout for more of their disinformation.

Perhaps The Guardian should also be more careful in how it presents its information. By promoting Higgins and his discredited outfit, they are once again promoting disinformation for the purposes of selling war. The US almost went to war with Syria (which it is doing now anyway) based on the flawed intelligence and “analysis” of people like Higgins. Naturally, everyone remembers how The Guardian, like all of its corporate media brethren, helped to sell the Iraq War based on complete lies. Have they learned nothing? It would seem so.

But those interested in peace and truth, we have learned something about propaganda and lies used to sell war. We who have called out these lies repeatedly – from Iraq in 2003, to Syria and Ukraine today – we once again repudiate the false narrative and the drumbeat for war. We reject the corporate media propagandists and their “alternative media” appendages. We stand for peace. And unlike The Guardian and Higgins, we stand on firm ground.
