FEDERICO PIERACCINI—The challenge for Russia and China is complex and ongoing. The transition from a unipolar to a multipolar world order is occurring as we speak, enabled by economic and military sovereignty. The challenge for these two Eurasian countries will be to increase their military and economic power, and correct the obvious imbalances in the current world order, without destroying it.

ANDREW KORYBKO—People are divided over what’s really happening, with some of them lambasting the President for capitulating under “deep state” pressure and therefore endangering the Helsinki spirit of Great Power rapprochement that looked so promising just recently while others are adamant that Trump’s still in control of everything and is just playing along as part of a “master plan”. For as widely ridiculed as the last-mentioned explanation often is whenever it’s used, especially whenever Palestine supporters evoke it when trying to explain away President Putin’s strategic alliance with Israel and recent establishment of a de-facto protectorate over it together with the US, it actually seems to be the most plausible interpretation of events in this instance, and there are good reasons to believe so.

Amid trial of former campaign chairman, Trump urges attorney general to end Russia probe “right now”
14 minutes readBARRY GREY—Manafort was thrown into jail when his house arrest was revoked last month. He also faces a separate trial next month in Washington, D.C., on charges brought by Mueller’s prosecutors. The charges in the two trials involve bank fraud, money laundering, tax evasion and failing to register as a lobbyist for a foreign government. They concern activities that predate Manafort’s five-month stint as adviser and then chairman of Trump’s 2016 campaign and do not directly relate to alleged Russian interference in the election and Trump campaign collusion.

ROB URIE—As widely loathed as the Democratic establishment is, it has been remarkably adept at engineering a reactionary response in favor of establishment forces. Its demonization of Russia! has been approximately as effective at fomenting reactionary nationalism as Mr. Trump’s racialized version. Lest this be overlooked, the strategy common to both is the use of oppositional logic through demonization of carefully selected ‘others.’

DAVID WALSH—This is the top 7 or 8 percent of the richest in America doing battle with the top 1 percent. This helps account for the self-pitying and unconvincing character of Farrow’s latest “bombshell.”
