Wherein the author examines the political lineage of Netanyahu, and finds him impeccably and virulently Zionist.
The column below was originally published on The Greanville Post on June 20, 2011.It has relevance now for two reasons.First, the Netanyahu government of the Likud still refuses to enter into any kind of serious negotiations with the Palestinians for a peace settlement, for the very same reasons that they have always engaged in such refusals.(Right now, of course, that refusal is punctuated by the killings of a substantive number of unarmed Palestinians who live in the Gaza concentration camp [but that is another matter]).Of particular interest now is the massive campaign being waged by Netanyahu to scrap the “Iran Deal.”He claims to have found “intelligence” which “proves” that Iran is violating the terms of the agreement (to which he happened to have been violently opposed from the start -- anything to avoid cooling down Middle East tensions).
Well first of all, concerns can be raised about the genuine nature of the “proof,” which would seem to have been obtained in a somewhat miraculous heist, worthy of one of many action-adventure films (James Bond, anyone?) As I said in a Tweet (May 1, 2108):
Bibi's in legal trouble and watching too much "Homeland." And so, his plot: Mossad gets into Iran, get trucks and men, finds a key warehouse, gets past security, steals a large number of paper docs., loads them, and somehow gets them out of Iran. Really? I've got this bridge ---”
But certainly there are significant differences of opinion among the parties to the Deal, and other interested parties, as to the significance of the materials, even should they prove to be genuine.A very important point here is that both Trump and Netanyahu are Masters of Distraction.Netanyahu faces the possibility of indictment on corruption charges while Trump, although there are genuine differences of opinion in the U.S. about the validity of the Mueller Investigation, could eventually face charges both of corruption and far worse.
At the same time, for domestic political reasons Netanyahu wants to keep the Iran Pot boiling. And those reasons are precisely the same ones that apply to Likud’s avoidance at any cost of any serious peace negotiations with the Palestinians, as discussed in my column below.— SJ
Why the Current Israeli Government Will Not Negotiate
REPOSTED BY READER DEMAND (First published Jun. 20, 2011)
With the rise to power of Benyamin Netanyahu, guessing games about whether the Right-Wing Israeli government is interested in seriously negotiating or, as Rabbi Siegman firmly says, they are not, are no longer necessary.
