MNN. May 4, 2011. US President Obama made the decision to send assassins to disfigure and brutally murder someone he said was Osama Bin Laden. Rather than capture and question a mastermind, they kill him and cowardly feed him to the sharks. Obama invited his powerful government decision makers to become desensitized to human slaughter by watching a live stream public killing.

Obama misnamed it “Operation Geronimo”. Factually the Apache Warrior was a respected military genius who brilliantly evaded the US and Mexican armies simultaneously. In 1889 he was forced to surrender when they threatened to capture and kill his people. The US ignored these conditions.

Editor's Note: As is inevitable with a figure as complex and mysterious as Osama
bin Laden, deeply embedded in the truth about the "War on Terror", and the  9/11 attacks,
all sorts of notions circulate as to his true nature, doings, and
impact on contemporary events. This is likely to continue for an indefinite time.
The  author of this piece, Jason Burke, seems to differ profoundly from some of most widely
accepted versions of Osama's life.
The reasons for this he outlines below, albeit without much subtantiation.
However, given his  status as well-regarded British journalist, we think it's editorially worthwhile
to publish his viewpoint and let our readers

SOME 24 hours have elapsed since the raid by US special forces and CIA operatives that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, but many of the circumstances and details of the attack remain murky, particularly the role of Pakistani security forces, both in protecting bin Laden and in aiding the eventual attack.

The most striking contradiction between the official US propaganda about the “war on terror” and the reality demonstrated in the raid is the location of bin Laden’s hiding place. Far from being holed up in a cave, isolated from the world, the Al Qaeda leader was in a palatial compound only half a mile from the Pakistan Military Academy, the equivalent of West Point, in a city which is home to many high-ranking retired military officers.

Editor’s Note: Like all things relating to the war on terror, we must take everything said about Al Qaeda with a lump of salt, and that applies to this take on the mysterious forces shaping our time. The article was filed by a retired Pakistani officer, with all the possible biases emanating from that quarter, including an inherent conservatism. On balance, nonetheless, we think the piece is worthwhile and newsworthy.

Al Qaeda took birth in late 1982 (not 1988/89, as usually stated, because 1989 was when it actually acquired the militant traits it is now famous for) in Kuwait, the birthplace of Osama bin Laden’s (its founder; OBL) father, ostensibly as a charitable organization to assist Muslims suffering all over the world. Very quickly, however, OBL realized that the way to ‘help’ oppressed Muslims was to arm them to rebel against the oppressor(s). Since 1989 witnessed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and OBL was one source for funneling arms to Afghan freedom fighters, Al Qaeda suddenly began to receive massive funding from all over the Arab World. He also swiftly entered the arena of gun-running.
