Prof Ted Postol chats with Nima
Prof Postol explains why it is far more difficult than most people assume to hit ships with missiles when operating at sea. Hitting a moving target, including a large target like an aircraft carrier, especially when engaged in complex maneuvers to avoid attack, requires a complex web of assets, notes Prof Postol, from advanced radar and global positioning systems, to missile characteristics, military intelligence (i.e., supplied by subs constantly following the carrier group), to sheer luck. Prof Postol also comments on the reasons for Ukraine’s air defense collapse, which is allowing Russia to bomb Kiev’s top strategic targets with far less cost than earlier, when advanced long-range surface to air missiles defense systems like Patriot interceptors (i.e., PAC-2 (blast-fragmentation) and PAC-3 / PAC-3 MSE (hit-to-kill direct impact) missiles) reduced the effect of such assault. Postol notes that Russia is now using “glide” bombs of enormous size up to 3.5 tons, with deadly effect, permitting Russia to eliminate hard targets without risking costly aircraft, pilots, or expensive missiles, since these “dumb munitions” are abundant and through attached “flying kits” can now be launched from standoff positions exceeding 100 miles.
Postol also has scathing words for the so-called experts shaping US foreign policy and especially its strategic posture, regarding them as worse than mediocre and product of an incestuous culture riddled with careerism and favoritism and dominated by class hostility toward any nation or culture they perceive to be a threat to their hegemony.
