People in South Korea’s Seong-ju county, where a US missile system is scheduled to be deployed, are pressing ahead with their protests to block the decision. This time, nearly one thousand residents shaved their heads in public to show their outrage.
The demonstration is the latest rally in the past month against the deployment of the US missile system. Seong-ju’s residents worry deploying the missile system known as THAAD will jeopardize their environment. They’re also concerned that the area will become a target in potential conflicts with South Korea’s adversaries, particularly North Korea. Washington claims the projectiles are meant to counter possible attacks from the North. Tensions mounted on the Korean Peninsula after Pyongyang conducted its fourth nuclear test in January followed by several missile tests. North Korea says it will continue such measures as long as the White House continues its hostile policies against the country.
