The Mecca joint defense agreement is described as a potential defensive arrangement involving Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. During the interview, it was noted that the Syrian foreign minister is considering whether Syria should join this grouping.

According to Ambassador Chas Freeman, Iran views the development of this tripartite entente between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey as a success for its own diplomacy. The ambassador explains that by moving away from reliance on a foreign patron like the United States, these countries are embracing self-reliance, which aligns with Iranian interests in the region.

Furthermore, the ambassador notes that while Tehran may not become an official member of the group, it could function as a dialogue partner or coordinator in a consultative relationship. He suggests that such an arrangement would serve as an effective counter to Israeli expansionism, which should be a cause for concern for Israel.

Ambassador Freeman explains that this tripartite entente is not an alliance in the traditional NATO sense—meaning there is no central command coordinating the armies—but rather a structure that invites consultation and emphasizes national interest and self-reliance over dependence on foreign patrons.
