Most importantly, from the mid-18th century when they conquered India as a colony, to the 20th, they initiated and participated in many military adventures around the globe: coups, invasions, blockades, destabilizations, etc. (excluding activities during the intra-imperialist WW1 and WW2) using proxy armies. In WW1, particularly, France did something similar, fielding Asian, Arab and African troops, although, being a land European power with immediate borders with Germany, they lacked the strategic advantage of being an island, like Britain. This forced the French ruling class into maintaining one of Europe's largest standing armies.
