Slavyansk is one of the strongest centers of rebel resistance against the putschists in Kyev. The city has a defense militia and many people support autonomy or integration with Russia.
IMPERIALIST FRONTS

This week’s mass killings in Donetsk have further exploded efforts to portray February’s Western-orchestrated putsch in Ukraine as a “democratic revolution” and exposed the brutal and reactionary character of Washington’s puppet regime in Kiev.

Ukrainian voters are today supposedly deciding on their new president. The United States and EU will try to use today’s elections for the central government to legitimize the illegitimate government they have imposed on Ukraine through the February coup. Yet, there can be nothing legitimate about elections held in country where fascist terror takes place with impunity. This includes the May 2nd Odessa Massacre where 116 anti-fascist protesters were murdered by neo-Nazis through fire, gunshot, beating to death, and strangulation. Those arrested were not the the fascists who committed these atrocities, but instead surviving anti-fascist protesters.
In the service of imperialism: Right-wing “intellectuals” gather in Kiev

Wieseltier: Long in the front lines of imperial apologetics.
By David North, Senior Cultural & Political Analyst, wsws.org
A group of right-wing academics, journalists, pro-war human-rights activists, and specialists in “discourse” is gathering in Kiev this coming weekend (May 16–19). The purpose of the meeting—headed by Professor Timothy Snyder of Yale University and Leon Wieseltier, the neo-con literary editor of the New Republic—is to bestow political and moral respectability on the Ukrainian regime that came to power in February, through a putsch financed and directed by the United States and Germany.
Kidnapped Girls Become Tools of U.S. Imperial Policy in Africa
In a complete vacuum of substantive news, manipulative stories like this rapidly gain currency.
The “humanitarian” U.S. military occupation of Africa has been very successful, thus far. “The Chibok abductions have served the same U.S. foreign policy purposes as Joseph Kony sightings in central Africa.” Imagine: the superpower that financed the genocide of six million in Congo, claims to be a defender of teenage girls and human rights on the continent. If you believe that, then you are probably a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

As pointed out by the BAR editors, the case of the “Kidnapped Girls” has quickly become the latest pretext for expanded American meddling in Africa. Meanwhile, the Nigerian military—a bunch of Western-supported thugs—continue to be one of the biggest organized mafias in all of Africa. Of course you’ll never hear that from the lips of Scott Pelley or Oprah. —Eds

“The Boko Haram, like other jihadists, had become more dangerous in a post-Gaddafi Africa – thus justifying a larger military presence for the Americans.”
