US EXCEPTIONALISM

ALEX RUBINSTEIN—It cannot be overstated how hypocritical it is that the United States is promoting its Summit for Democracy by taking actions that are illegal under international law. According to the United Nations Charter, Chapter VII, Article 41, only the United Nations Security Council may enact economic sanctions against United Nations members.

Nonetheless, Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres will deliver opening remarks at the summit on Friday.

But this is just the beginning of provocations by the U.S. While opting to snub Russia and China from the summit, both Taiwan and Ukraine have been invited as a clear signal that the United States will leverage them to undermine its rivals, regardless of whether or not these confrontations are to the detriment of the people of Taiwan or Ukraine.

MATT EHRET—Besides the fact that this ‘democracy summit’ has undemocratically chosen to not invite nearly half of the nations on earth, including China and Russia, the USA is still somehow projecting the image that it is the leader of the free and democratic rules-based international order. The fact is that no nation has done more work to undermine democracies, spread war and murder over the past 70 years than the USA- and only a very shallow zombie, living in a self-congratulatory echo chamber, would miss that fact.

FINIAN CUNNINGHAM—All the signals point to an invasion by an emboldened Kiev regime of the breakaway Donbass region. The plight of the ethnic Russian population in the face of wanton aggression will bring strong political pressure on Moscow to intervene militarily.

However, the dutiful Western media will report this like a self-fulfilling prophesy and lay the blame on Russia for “violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity”. Putin will be denounced as Europe’s “new Hitler” along with other absurdities laundered as truth. More economic sanctions will be unleashed against Moscow and most likely the Nord Stream 2 gas project between Russia and the European Union will be axed as a matter of Brussels’s “solidarity” with oppressed Ukraine.

ERIC ZUESSE—Mercouris’s statement got me to wondering why Putin would be demanding, now, after all of these decades when he wasn’t, that the lying promises that George Herbert Walker Bush’s representatives had been making to Gorbachev and to his representatives, that the U.S. and its allies had no goal of conquering Russia if the Soviet Union and its communism and its Warsaw-Pact copy of America’s NATO military alliance, all would end, and that NATO would then NOT expand closer to Russia’s border, turned out to have been lies (by G.H.W. Bush) that were clearly demonstrated by all subsequent U.S. Presidents to have been lies. WHY would Putin now want those lies to be signed by the U.S. Government and its vassal-nations, after the U.S. regime’s entire record ever since the end of WW II has been one of lying? Why would he want the U.S. signature being now placed on those promises?
