In two potent videos with Nima Alkhorshid Larry Johnson clarifies the situation in Syria

LARRY C. JOHNSON touches on and clarifies numerous aspects of the confusing situation in Ukraine and Syria, noting that a rush to judgment at this point is probably conducive to huge errors. That said, he is severe in his evaluation of Bashar al-Assad, a man he thinks will go down in history as a "man of no consequence." Assad could have begged (and probably secured) economic and development help from China, Russia and Iran, thereby avoiding the rapid weakening of the Syrian nation. He could have accepted Moscow's offers to train up and fortify his army, which he inexplicably turned down (and whose dilapidated and demoralised condition apparently did not concern him enough to properly ascertain). Instead, he sought readmission into the pro-West club of Arab states, many of whom are now busily betraying Syria. Assad in fact just took off for Moscow without even attempting to save his own relatives and closest friends and associates, some of whom have already been murdered by HTS. Assad was a man who lost his country...and helped destroy it. His character deficiencies doomed Syria to its current fate. Bashar al-Assad's recent self-serving statement in Moscow is pretty shameful, says Larry. As for Russia, Larry thinks that Putin and his generals did what they had to do, as they saw they could not rectify the rot in Syria due to the character of the players. Putin, says Larry, had to think about how to defend Russia itself, and the BRICS alliance, and other nations in the "near Russia", all under mounting strategic attack by the US and its minions. "Washington is clearly promoting unrest in Georgia," warns Larry. "split off Armenia* from its traditional relationship with Russia...The West is intent on trying to crush Putin, the Russian state...and take control of the place. I can't emphasise that enough. That is diabolical. The US can't leave others alone. That's why I come back and use the term rapist, the US has become like a serial rapist. We are going to violate every other country if we can."
*{The US regime change ops are also evident in Moldavia, Thailand, Bangla Desh, Central Asia, Pakistan, and Romania.} And Moscow still needs to conclusively win the Ukraine war. Under such circumstances, being forced to bleed resources in a no-win situation calculated by Washington to "extend Russia" dangerously, was simply injudicious and Syria had to be let go.
