Ironic to bring up the catholic rebellion in Japan, because later there was the Ikkō-ikki, which was a Buddhist rebellion which was very communist in nature. The jizamurai, a new class of small landowners, "formed leagues (ikki) for mutual defence" They believed in equality of all people, wanted to banish hierarchy structures, did not recognize the right to rule of the feudal lords. This was a far more leftist movement, unfortunately, Vince didn't seem to know Japanese history very well, neither were Japanese "nature worshipers" or animists, there was Shinto influence in Japan, and they were predominantly Buddhist. I will cut him some slack considering the education on eastern civilization back then. Also, the Japanese banned Christianity in Japan because of the uprisings and violence which they considered to be a foreign influence trying to take over their country, and considering what happened with Catholicism, and eradication of indigenous culture and even language in places such as the Philippines by Spain, they were most likely correct. |
Very interesting. Though, Christianity never really had much success in either China or Japan, yes because of sometime state animosity, but also because a large portion of the population were just disinterested. They were quite happy with their own ideas |
The continent of South America where the natives had their own religion we are forced to accept Catholicism at gunpoint, Same is true with Africa ! Evangelising people without violence or force is was not a Priority for the Catholic Church. Japan has a relative comfortable catholic minority, China also a catholic and orthodox Minority, But of course it doesn’t have European characteristics it has Asians characteristics ! It’s interesting how the natives incorporate a foreign religion into their existing culture |
