Belafonte interviewed by Democracy Now!
“Sing Your Song”: Remembering Harry Belafonte, Who Used His Fame to Help MLK & Civil Rights Movement
[su_testimonial name=”—The Editor” photo=”https://www.greanvillepost.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Screen-Shot-2022-03-08-at-5.30.06-PM.png”]Editor’s Note: Democracy Now! is no longer the platform it once was. For decades a leading showcase of progressive journalism, in the last few years there’s been clear signs of imperialist contamination in its programming, forcing many dedicated supporters to reconsider how they see the program. This interview with Belafonte, of course, for a variety of reasons, including the subject’s forceful personality and lucidity, and the fact it took place some time ago, and deals with an icon of the human rights movement in the US and abroad, is largely free of such flaws. Amy Goodman’s show, Democracy Now, might better be renamed, Democracy Then. In fact, Amy showed signs of selling out long ago, when Pacifica was going through a hostile takeover by the usual liberal suspects. She was already getting large donations from mega foundations. After 911, she refused to discuss the obvious flaws in the official narrative. As years went by, she adopted all too often the liberal imperialist narrative of Responsibility to Protect and supported the US accusations against Syria. I stopped watching DN! years ago, but its pernicious slide to the Liberal camp dragged many an unsuspecting peace activist to adopt wrong views, most notably Russiagate and the Ukraine war.
