PAUL EDWARDS—Things can be quite similar without being identical. The claim that the murder of Charlie Kirk is equivalent to the fire that led to the decree of martial law in Berlin in 1933, implies they are equal in impact which, judging by their results, they are clearly not. That each of them created deep social disturbance is fact.

Charlie King is on his way to become America’s Horst Wessel.
The Reichstag Fire was pinned on one unbalanced individual, but was set by agents of the Nazi party to enable and permanize Hitler’s power over Germany. From the moment he issued the decree immediately after the fire, his dictatorship was absolute, and the nation became his property, to manage as he wished.

Response to Kirk’s murder cannot be compared to that outcome, and has not produced such a move from our Maximum Leader, but it would be idle to pretend it has not generated tremendous outrage in a great part of the electorate. The mass obsequies staged in a vast auditorium, comparable to the jammed stadiums of Big 10 football games, are an indicator of its magnitude.
