Shannon Jones, of Bronxites for NYPD Accountability, who was among 250 people arrested at a massive police assault on protesters, June 4, warns that some corporate foundation-funded groups now constitute a “controlled opposition” to the ruling order. “Follow the money,” said Jones. “There are so many organizations that are profiting and poverty-pimping off of Black pain and struggle.” Jones’ organization and others have for several years been confronting the NYPD under the slogan “F the Police.”

CAITLIN JOHNSTONE—In our society, those who are uplifted, rewarded and applauded are those who make it their sole focus in life to obtain as much influence over as many lives as possible. That’s basically how our insane society defines “success”: having a whole lot of employees, a whole lot of subservients, a whole lot of consumers, a whole lot of fans, a whole lot of people who listen to you and think you’re important. The more lives you affect, the more successful you are considered to be.
What this means is that those who wind up having the most influence over the most people are the ones who made doing so their highest priority in life.

ERIC SCHECHTER—The biggest counter-argument I get about this involves paying taxes. If “we” pay taxes, then aren’t “we” complicit in all the government’s terrible crimes? I like to answer by talking about the Resistance during the Nazi occupation of France. The members of the Resistance paid their taxes to the Nazi-controlled government, because they felt they could resist more effectively from outside of prison than from inside it. You have to know which battles to fight. But when the members of the Resistance were talking just among themselves, they did not say “we are rounding up the Jews.” Which side are you on?

GABRIEL ROCKHILL—Ford was only one of the American companies invested in Germany, and many other U.S. banks, firms and investors profited handsomely from Aryanizations (the expulsion of Jews from business life and the forced transfer of their property into ‘Aryan’ hands), as well as from the German rearmament program. According to Christopher Simpson’s masterful study, “a half-dozen key U.S. companies—International Harvester, Ford, General Motors, Standard Oil of New Jersey, and du Pont—had become deeply involved in German weapons production.” In fact, American investment in Germany sharply increased after Hitler came to power.

ERIC SCHECHTER—Russiagate is interesting. The Democrats cannot accuse Trump of any of his real crimes, though they are many, because the Democrats are guilty of all those same crimes. So instead the Democrats had to invent a crime, and make use of the fact that they currently have better control of the corporate news media. A lie repeated sufficiently many times begins to seem true. And why not simultaneously paint Russia or China as bad guys; this will enable the weapons companies to sell more weapons at higher profit.
