Within a few days of the death of American poet and environmental activist Wendell Berry at the age of 92, another prominent American also died at 92 — feminist icon Gloria Steinem.
I had a brief interaction with Steinem back when I was an editorial cartoonist and editor of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists quarterly newsletter. The campaign for the feminist Equal Rights Amendment — remember that? — was ramping up across the nation. I solicited original published cartoons from AAEC members to be donated to a fundraising auction for an ERA event in Austin, Texas.
Steinem was a speaker at the event. The auction of the cartoons went well and I was presented a certificate of thanks by Steinem. She said a couple words thanking the AAEC and that was it. The briefest of a brush with fame.

And this is the result: a misguided understanding of history and culture.
The mainstream media has been filled with laudatory articles praising Steinem as a bold trailblazing advocate for women’s rights and founding Ms. magazine. But as with so many lefty protest icons of the 60s and 70s, there was some pretty dark and shady stuff behind the protest signs and groovy music.
Donald Jeffries’ 2016 book “Hidden History: An Expose Of Modern Crimes, Conspiracies, and Cover-ups in American Politics” has a whole chapter on the sixties “radicals”, many of whom actively worked for or were funded and promoted by the CIA in a methodical campaign to weaken, fragment, discredit and disembowel the left to neutralize the anti-war and civil rights movement. A campaign that was highly effective and continues to cripple today’s left.
Gloria Steinem was one of those CIA radical assets.
As Jeffries documents in his book, despite supposedly being raised in “abject poverty”, Steinem some how managed to attend the elite Smith College and upon graduating was awarded the Chester Bowles Student Fellowship to study abroad in India. Bowles had been a US ambassador to India.
“In a very odd twist,” Jeffries notes. “It appears that she was the first and only recipient of the otherwise un-heard of award.”
In 1958 CIA operative Cord Meyer — who had connections to the JFK assassination and whose own wife had an ongoing affair with Kennedy and would die of mysterious circumstances — placed Steinem in charge of an activist group called the Congress for Cultural Freedom, which “…sponsored leftist magazines to counter Marxism.”
Through Meyer, Steinem became heavily involved in the leftist Vienna Youth Festivals, which were also attended by a young Harvard professor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, the future national security advisor to Pres. Jimmy Carter. In 1967 the much-missed Ramparts magazine exposed the CIA’s connection to sponsorship of the festivals. When asked about the CIA involvement, Steinem blithely defended the CIA’s role in the festivals.
As a side note, Brzezinski’s 1997 book “The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy And Its Geostrategic Imperatives” laid out the goals and strategic plan for American hegemonic control of Western Asia that has directly led to the bloody disasters in Ukraine and Iran and the ever-darkening acceleration toward nuclear war.
Becoming a 60s icon
Esquire magazine editor Clay Felker, another CIA asset, began publishing articles by Steinem in the early 60s, which elevated her to be the leading voice and icon of lefty feminism.

“She spent nine years with Stanley Pottinger,” Jeffries reports, “an assistant attorney general to presidents Nixon and Ford who was instrumental in stalling inquiries into the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.”
Perfect partner for a womens rights hero, eh?
But that wasn’t the worst of Steinem’s shagging history. Prepare yourself for the next paragraph and get a bucket in your lap…
“Later in the 1980s,” Jeffries reports. “She would actually date Henry Kissinger.”

Jeffries notes that in later years, when Steinem was confronted with her numerous CIA connections and funding, she said the problem wasn’t that she had been an operator for the agency but that the CIA wasn’t sneaky enough hiding their tracks.
“The CIA’s big mistake was not supplanting itself with private funds fast enough,” Steinem stated.
It wasn't her duplicity that was the problem, it was a bookkeeping issue. A problem the agency has since addressed over the years with its international cartel operations running drugs into urban minority communities and well-funded corporate and Israeli bank cards.
In recent years, feminist Steinem’s employer was part of and beneficiary of the Jeffrey Epstein trafficking/blackmail operation.
In scanning various mainstream obituaries on Steinem and her long career, scant if any mention — at most a feathery line or two — was made of her CIA connections and funding.
Oh, and as for the iconic feminist Ms. magazine?
“Steinem’s feminist magazine MS. also benefited from substantial CIA funding,” Jeffries notes.
May she join her former paramour Henry where he deservedly wound up.
