Violence exists in nature…. animals kill other animals for survival… The problem arises when humans declare themselves superior to the animals, as is the case for dominion of the three semitic religions: judaism, christianity and islam:
Genesis 9:1-3 “The fear and dread of you shall rest on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish in the sea.”
With human supremacy comes the right to destroy and violate animal lives with moral righteousness. The fault with this reasoning is that violence to animals is justified ‘because ‘it exists in nature’.
If man were truly above the animals he would not boast of his authority to terrorize, kill and exploit them for human advantage. You can’t be above the animals and then act like them, not for survival as they do, but for amusement, sport, luxury products, religious rituals, gluttony, trophy hunting, prestige and self-aggrandizement.
To date in the history of human presence on earth only one community has risen above the animals… with a philosophy that honors reverence for life. The Jain community of India has lived a cruelty free lifestyle for thousands of years with Ahimsa, which values the lives of humans and animals alike. All the violence of dominion is rejected. Living beings, animals and humans may not be harmed or killed:
“All things breathing, all things existing, all living beings whatever, would not be slain or treated with violence, or insulted, or tortured or driven away. This is the pure unchanging eternal law, which the wise ones who know the world have proclaimed…” Jain Acharanga Sutra
“The eternal mystery of the world is its intelligibility. True religion fastens to this element of intelligibility and creates a system of thought and action which leads to true harmony and bliss. And it is indeed so with Jainism.” – Albert Einstein
