Closing words
Like vampires fearing light, capitalists elites have always been afraid of the socialist demonstration effect. A huge and constant effort is aimed at “showing” that socialism doesn’t work, that it is tyrannical, inefficient, etc. Thus sabotaging and killing socialism wherever it may arise —Russia, China, Korea, Venezuela, Chile—by any means necessary, no matter how brutal and dishonest, is therefore standing policy. But socialist solutions work. And Medicare for All would show everyone in America, the key capitalist fortress, that many of our nightmares can easily vanish under socialism. For the capitalists and their hanger-ons it would be a Pandora’s box.—P. Greanville

I don’t know why WSWS keeps picking on Sanders. One of the imperialists IS going to win the election, and they’re not all identical; Sanders is less bad than any of the others who have any chance of winning. Thus, voting for Sanders is actually our best strategy in the voting booth. (Of course, it would be a mistake to confine our actions to the voting booth.)
In fact, I’d give Sanders a higher rating than “less bad.” Though WSWS disagrees with me about this, I would give Sanders’s 2016 campaign credit for convincing most of the American public that capitalism cannot properly manage healthcare or education. That brings us a step closer to convincing them that capitalism can’t properly manage anything else either.
Admittedly, Sanders’s foreign policy is pretty bad. But the other possible winners of the 2020 race are even worse. And WSWS has been twisting Sanders’s foreign policy out of proportion and out of context. Sanders has been saying little about foreign policy — mostly he has been just briefly mouthing conventional mainstream (corporate, imperialist) platitudes on the subject, to avoid calling attention to himself on this subject, to avoid getting JFK’d.
I have no certainty about this, but I think I have good reason to hope that Sanders’s foreign policy will improve after he wins the presidency. Here is why: In my judgment, most presidents have waged wars (hot and cold) and shaped their foreign policy for reasons determined by their domestic situation. They do it to strengthen their grip on power at home and/or to enrich their friends. I see Sanders having neither of those reasons. On the contrary, his domestic policy has been altogether progressive.
Sanders is no Eugene Debs, but he’ll be the most progressive president since Franklin Roosevelt. Who, unfortunately, saved capitalism from a socialist revolution. So I’m not saying Bernie is the answer to all our prayers. I’m just saying he’ll postpone the extinction of the human race, thereby giving us a bit more time to overthrow him and the rest of capitalism. Unlike the people he is running against in both money parties.
