OB-B—The approach of a Russian tanker to Cuba could lead to an escalation of what has been up until now mainly a proxy war between the US and Russia, but even then the oil would take a month to process and refine. I don’t know if the tanker has a military escort.

Cuba cannot wait that long. It is almost without power. In Russia itself, Moscow, Belgorod, and Russian oil refineries are targeted every day by hundreds of Ukrainian drones; Moscow is shutting down the internet almost every day for long periods. Russia’s total territorial advances in Ukraine after four years of fighting remain glacial; last month it lost more territory than it gained. The argument that this is attritional warfare has merit but exactly who is being attrited grows less certain by the day.

Albeit its European NATO partners have politically defied the US, behind the scenes it has de facto gathered whatever remains of its military arsenal, in the Eastern Mediterranean. This places the European Armada within a close range to the Strait of Hormuz, potentially setting the stage for what its leadership claims to be “defensive operations.”

This rhetoric of European bourgeois politicians merely serves as a mechanism to obfuscate the masses into believing that they want no part of this war — thus controlling the narrative. However the strategic position of the EU’s military assets, and the aim of potentially and conditionally extending Operation Aspides to the Strait of Hormuz — places them in direct opposition to Iranian military aims.

BRIAN BERLETIC—The US has burned through huge quantities of high-end weapons on Iran it had been stockpiling for war it sought to provoke with China in the Asia-Pacific;
The US not only likely never had enough weapons for a war with China, but it will be unable to even replace what it has spent on Iran for years to come;
The US war on Iran is thus likely an attempt to reduce or remove 2 obstacles to US primacy with one war, degrading or toppling Iran and the imposition of a global maritime oil blockade on China at its source (US capture of Venezuela, US strikes on Russian energy production, and now the incremental shutdown of energy exports from the Middle East);
The US likely hopes it can emerge from the global economic crisis it is creating “stronger” relative to China.
