More Deception from The Neocon Echo Chamber on Tax Cuts

Financial oligarchs: Paulson, Bernanke, Geithner, both rich and shills for the rich.

THE NARRATIVE ON TAX CUTS goes something like this: “You don’t want to raise taxes on the job creators during a recession.” This is a powerful argument. Unfortunately, it is a dishonest argument. It is just as disingenuous as its corollary, “I’ve never seen a poor person hire anyone.” What if everything you thought you knew proved to be false? George Orwell wrote a book about this scenario called 1984. Today, we find ourselves living in that Orwellian world of Big Brother. The only one difference between Orwell’s 1984 and America’s 2011. Big Brother is the plutocracy instead of the government. Continue reading »

Libya presents a dilemma to many on the left

Bertil Videt

Is the military action against Libya necessary and helpful in order to stop Gaddafi’s regime’s onslaught on its opponents or is it an imperialist aggression driven by strategical self-interest, which only will make things worse for the Libyan people? The international left is split on this question. And the question is truly complex and cannot be answered by ready made slogans about always being opposed to imperialist aggressions or unconditional support to the rebels. A serious response must be based on a concrete assessment of the situation in Libya, and not on abstract principles or revolutionary rhetoric. Continue reading »

Jim Hightower (2008)

Unfortunately, the corporatization of America’s judiciary is not just a problem at the top. For more than 30 years, there has been a concerted effort by such ultra-wealthy corporate supremists as the Kochs, Scaifes, DeVoses, Coors, and Murdochs to place extremist, laissez-faire ideologues throughout the federal court structure. Using their extensive, well funded, and coordinated network of front groups, these moneyed elites can now move litigation through corporate-friendly courts at the district, appellate, and supreme levels. The return of dread Thatcherism? The Brits think so.

By DJ Pangburn Saturday, March 26, 2011

You know shit is going badly for the wealthy elite when Black Block-style protesters take to the streets.

The UK newspaper, ‘The Independent,’ is reporting that nearly half a million protesters have taken to the street in anti-cuts protests.  The protests were organized as peaceful, but expect authorities to whip up fury with agent provocateurs, the tactic Carlos F. Lam suggested to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Continue reading »

The old fake-an-attack-on-yourself trick—

No dirty trick is too dirty to those trying to hold back popular democracy.

Carlos Lam, a deputy prosecutor in Johnson County, Ind., says he did not write the email from his account encouraging Gov. Scott Walker to fake an attack against himself. Photo from a video debate posted at 3 Left Turns Make a Right.

AN INDIANA PROSECUTOR and Republican activist has resigned after emails show he suggested Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker stage a fake attack on himself to discredit unions protesting his budget repair bill.

The Republican governor signed a bill on March 11 that eliminates most union rights for public employees.

In an email from February 19, Indiana deputy prosecutor  Carlos F. Lam told Walker the situation presented “a good opportunity for what’s called a ‘false flag’ operation.”

The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism [1] discovered the email among tens of thousands released to the public last week following a lawsuit by the Isthmus and the Associated Press.

“If you could employ an associate who pretends to be sympathetic to the unions’ cause to physically attack you (or even use a firearm against you), you could discredit the unions,” Lam said in his email. Continue reading »

Mitch McConnel, John Boehner, E. Cantor—GOP big whigs.

“The GOP likes to bleat that it is the party of new ideas (although most of them, like “lower taxes” and “smaller government” – except in matters of religious belief and personal choice, of course – are rather old).  Well these ideas — that is legislating dictatorship  — are surely new, both in American history and also on the world stage.  As noted, so far the dictatorial powers achieved legislatively by two state GOP administrations are relatively narrow (although not so for the affected parties).  But they are dictatorial in the sense that the executive branch operates on its own authority, with no checks and balances.  And yes indeed, unlike the powers seized in one way or another by dictators in the past, these weren’t seized militarily or on the authority of a monarch or through a rigged parliament, but were created as the outcome of the democratic process (at least on paper).  One can only say, look out, USA.  Here comes the GOP and it seems to have dictatorship on its mind.” Continue reading »

Media Matters founder David Brock

“I’m here to be intensely trained,” Lee Brenner announced as he came through the door of a discreet building near Dupont Circle.

The brick carriage house is usually the headquarters of the Mathematical Association of America, but for a few days in the middle of March, the left-wing organization Media Matters for America converted it into a partisan boot camp where rebel forces were trained for combat on Fox News. Over four grueling days, Harvard-honed instructors drilled a dozen softie policy wonks, molding them into an elite unit of smiling, succinct and well-coiffed talking heads. Continue reading »

Note: This is a special category of people who, knowing the ravages of poverty, rise to fortune, and like many self-made people, waste no time in thinking (a) that anyone (!) can do the same; or (b) that the “losers” deserve what they get (or rather, don’t get).  The empathetic imagination is sorely lacking in these individuals. They make instant common cause with other millionaires and zillionaires at the top. The idea that wealth and poverty are two sides of the same coin is alien to their narrow, mean-spirited  minds.  Obviously, by a large margin, they’re at home in the Republican party, which has long specialized in enemies of the people like this, but Democrats also have their share of indecents.—P. Greanville Continue reading »
