I have my own guess: the masses never wanted communism – nor do they want anything else, other than … to live well.
The Ukraine war is not of particular interest to US powers as it is meant to ultimately de-power Russia by attrition and ready it for the tactic of encirclement of China, the real antagonist that the US needs to defeat. Once Russia has been exhausted, they reason, US interests can invade it and set up the same kind of armaments as NATO is now introducing into Ukraine. That way Russia’s great landmass can shadow China’s upper border, completing a full encirclement of the country and compress it to a large but lesser colony. That is the real existential danger.

Indeed. And let us never forget that, technically speaking, a libertarian is an economic liberal extremist, which when all s said and done classifies Gleenn as a liberal, with all the warts that the term implies including, as you note, the implacable liberals hatred for real socialism. Greenwald’s use of the word “regime” to refer to countries that are engaged in any form of process to build real socialism, instead of some welfarist capitalist or social democrat non-solution, gives the game away.
