PEPE ESCOBAR—Cool, calm, and collected, without a hint of aggression, Putin’s speech painted Russia as an ancient, independent, and quite distinct civilization – sometimes following a path in concert with other civilizations, sometimes in divergence. Ukraine, part of Russian civilization, now happens to be occupied by western civilization, which Putin said “became hostile to us,” like in a few instances in the past. So the acute phase of what is essentially a war by proxy of the west against Russia takes place over the body of Russian civilization.

A Good Example of Why Putin Has Always Had Very High Approval Ratings by Russia’s Voters
17 minutes readERIC ZUESSE—On the afternoon of 21 February 2023, Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, delivered to his countrymen — but also speaking importantly to the entire world (since his speech is significant for the future history of the world, and not only for Russians) — a “Presidential Address to Federal Assembly”, which I, as a historian who has reviewed the source documents on all particulars, can independently verify was entirely truthful in its account of history.

The discussion focuses on the history of Russian/American relations in the recent past, and the US/NATO policies directly provoking the current proxy war in Ukraine, which Moscow correctly interprets as forcing a war against the whole collective West. The host and his guest also touch upon the nature of Russia’s transformation under Putin, and the openly proclaimed objectives of the “Western alliance”, including regime change in Moscow, the defeat and destruction of Russia as a world-class military power, and the balkanisation of Russia into vassal statelets for easier control and exploitation.
