JANICE KORTKAMP—Really the most important thing for westerners to know is this: that in any conflict there are the expansionist-aggressors and there are defenders. In Syria, the expansionist-aggressors are the US, UK, Israel, France, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar; while Syria and its allies of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah are the defenders. This means for there to be peace, the expansionist-aggressors must end their aggression. It’s not rocket science

Food Shipment Destined For Venezuela Seized Due to [criminal] US Blockade
“Venezuela denounces before the world that a boat that holds 25 thousand tons of tons of soy, for food production in our country, has been seized in the Panama Canal, due to the criminal blockade imposed by Donald Trump,” the vice president said in a tweet. “Venezuela calls on the UN to stop this serious aggression by DonaldTrump’s govt against our country, which constitutes a massive violation of the human rights of the entire Venezuelan people, by attempting to impede their right to food.”

Memo to the NYT: The Russia Ship Has Sailed
NATYLIE BALDWIN—In 2013-14, the democratically elected leader of Ukraine was pushed out in an illegal coup, actively supported by Washington with neo-Nazis acting as the muscle, that brought an anti-Russian government into power. Crimea, which had historically been part of Russia since the late 18th century with a majority of its population comprised of ethnic Russians and Russian speakers, also had an important naval base on its coast called Sevastopol. Crimea/Sevastopol had been administratively moved by Khrushchev in 1954 from Russia to Ukraine, with no one yet foreseeing the future breakup of the USSR.

New charges against Julian Assange under the Espionage Act criminalize journalism
ANDRE DAMON—The New York Times published an editorial Thursday night stating that the indictment “is a marked escalation in the effort to prosecute Mr. Assange, one that could have a chilling effect on American journalism as it has been practiced for generations. It is aimed straight at the heart of the First Amendment,” which protects “the ability of publishers to provide the public with the truth.” The editorial concludes that the “case now represents a threat to freedom of expression and, with it, the resilience of American democracy itself.” However, for the last decade, the Times’ coverage of the persecution of Assange has been compromised by malicious hostility to the WikiLeaks publisher. Indeed, in the very editorial criticizing the attack on the First Amendment, the Times lends credence to the Justice Department’s case, declaring that “there is much to be troubled by in Mr. Assange’s methods and motives, which remain murky.”

TOM LUONGO—At some point one has to realize that a particular policy has failed and cut a deal. The Council of Europe bowed to internal pressure as five years of rising Euroskepticism and stagnating exports to a formerly strong market for most of Europe, especially mighty Germany, finally pushed them to end the grandstanding. It’s too bad psychopaths like John Bolton never understand this. This is the necessary first step to defying the U.S. over sanctions this summer when they come up again. And, what’s the point, anyway? Blocking one pipeline only to empower two others is just idiotic.
